I know I'll prob bring my driver's license for ID, but what about things like Passport, social security card, Green card (if you have one).

Would copies suffice? or should we bring the actual documents?

You will need a photocopy of your birth certificate (if you get a part-time job on campus, it's required for HR and filling out tax forms). Bring a copy of your health insurance card number. Yes, bring your drivers' license and passport (actual and copy).

why would i need the actual copy of my passport?

also, what about like, green card?

Here in my dorm room, I have:

Driver's License (for ID and I have my car here)
birth certificate--needed for job and will need in a few months to renew driver's license
passport (just easier than getting it mailed from home when I filled out forms for a 3-week summer course that traveled to Asia)
my military ID card (need for health insurance purposes)
Social Security card--I think I needed to show this for my job, but can't remember
Health insurance card--I have the military coverage (retired parents) as well as coverage from my dad's current job, which requires a different card.

I don't know much about green cards, but seems like something you'd have to have for hiring purposes and maybe for other things that I'm not aware of.

Generally copies will be fine, but realize that copying copies of cards can make things illegible. The Walgreens I went to for a new prescription made a copy of my copy of my health insurance card (for their own files), and couldn't even read their copy of it. With a passport I think a copy would be sufficient. But for things like a birth certificate, I know that to get a new license or something like that, they require the original copy with the original watermark or raised symbol, neither of which comes through on a copy.

You need to have your green card (aren't you supposed to carry with you at all times in case INS comes? That's always what I've been told).

I know that I need my originals. I'm also bringing by passport, birth certificate and health insurance card. No Driver's license, so that's why I'm bringing the passport (photo ID). Some schools let you use copies, others don't.

lol, but the chances of that is pretty slim,

its like getting caught driving without your license, but you still technically have one.

thanks a lot guys!

you should always carry your health insurance card with you. If your in a ambulance the EMS people look for it and that determines which hospital you go to.

I carry my driver's license and health insurance card around with me. I do have my SS card tucked away in a very safe place in my dorm room. Needed it to get hired on-campus.

The only things you "need" to have while on campus is a government issued photo ID (i.e. Driver's License) and your health insurance card. The first one is just nice to have in case you need to identify yourself, and the second is necessary if you get injured or need medical assistance.

If you want to work, however, schools will require you to show two forms of ID - one of them can be your Driver's License. The easiest and safest other form of ID to keep with you is your Social Security card. You don't really need your passport with you because the other two are acceptable, and if you happen to lose your passport... well I'm sure it'd be very inconvenient in this day and age.

Just curious, but why on earth would someone need a birth certificate AND a passport or a birth certificate to renew a DL? I understand the birth certificates are proof of age & citizenship, but that's what a passport is for. Same goes for DL. Need the BC the first time to prove age, but to renew? We're able to do that on-line or by mail.

I'd bring the passport if I were you. Makes those weekend trips to Paris much easier. ;)

Just bring everything important like your passport/greencard/driver's license/etc etc. If you ever wanna fly out of the country for some reason you don't want your mom to take a week mailing it to you and then losing it in the mail. I just keep all the important file with me in my drawer. I mean if you going to college all by yourself hopefully you are responsible enough not to lose them randomly.
