What kind of laptop bag is best in college?

What kind of laptop bag is best in college - over the shoulder, handle, or cart? Maybe I should be really saying, what is the most popular kind?

I use a laptop sleeve and tuck my laptop into my regular backpack. But I also never bring my laptop anywhere but the library or home. Here (a state school), I see every option: laptop backpacks, laptop briefcase type things, and then the type of thing I use. My school computer store actually sells the laptop sleeves; mine is a neoprene type thing that my laptop gets zipped into. It fits on my laptop snug enough to keep it secure.

My bag can be used as either a carryable briefcase-type bag or an over the shoulder. I always carry it with the handles. This is true of the bag for my other iBook as well.

I've never used one of the backpacks, but I'd imagine a regular backpack would be just as good as the laptop ones if you padded it well.

What kind are most useful? The backpack ones since you maybe able to carry more, such as your books? Do the briefcase ones cause your arm to fatigue?

Thanks for helping answer my questions. I want to be prepared for college as much as I can.

I use a nice big targus for my 17 inch screen laptop. It's very nicely padded and can be adapted to other situations not including a laptop also.

I have a nice targus one. It is important to be able to store a binder or textbook in the outer sleeve, and make sure it is very comfortable on the shoulder. I'm a big CS Junkie, so I take my laptop everywhere; competitions, classes, accross campus, etc.

Also, you might want to get something that looks professional(I have black) because when I often meet profs/grad students, I give demo's of my work, and if I have to get dressed up, the bag works fine.

I like the slip cases.. not a lot of extra bulk, but can help protect the laptop when it's in your backpack (unless you have one of those nifty backpacks with the case area built in to the back of the backpack)

The other thing I like about the slip case vs. the full on backpack is that when I do presentations at conferences I can carry just the laptop over the shoulder instead of a giant bulky backpack.

I use the sleeve in my backpack, but it does become a nuisance when I'm trying to get out my laptop or putting it back in, as I have to take out the sleeve then the laptop from the sleeve. My current backpack is in great shape, so I don't want to buy a new one. But when it comes time to, I plan to get one of the Targus, Swiss, or MobileEdge backpacks that are designed to hold a laptop.

by far the most common is a laptop sleeve in a backpack, at least on my campus. Remember that you won't be bringing it everywhere, so having some special laptop bag is silly. Also, a plain backpack is less likely to be stolen than a fancy laptop case.

I have a vertical slip case/sleeve so I can remove the laptop without removing the entire case from my backpack.

The most important thing to consider when buying a laptop case is the size of your laptop. The first case I ordered online claimed to fit 15.4" widescreen laptops, but mine stuck out two inches. So then I looked for cases that gave the maximum demensions rather than just the screen size.. I was overjoyed when I finally found one that fit my laptop perfectly without breaking the bank.

I have this Targus neoprene sleeve that's pretty good - fits my Thinkpad well. I don't need to bring it to class that much, so it works for my needs. A lot of people here either have separate bags or just tend to stick it in whatever bag they use to bring books to class.

If your laptop is small enough, a sleeve in a backpack works best. On the other hand, if you have a huge laptop, a dedicated bag that goes over your shoulder might be preferable.

:)

what about the built in ones in some backpacks such as the northface ones are those enough protection or is and additional sleeve similar to above recommended

I'm going to get a over the shoulder bag + a sleeve to protect it. The bag I'm getting has enough room for a book or two, and lots of pockets to store things, and it looks somewhere inbetween really casual and professional (it's black).

I have a cheap messenger bag dealie for mine. it's also used for storing the cords and stuff that go with it.

(...I never take it to class)

here the most inconspicuous one is the best.
basically like every1 said, the sleeve kind is the best, you don't look like you're carrying a laptop
i have a great one for 12" ibooks, it's smooth black, and depending on how you zip it, it can have handles to carry it along, or not, so you can jus slip it into your backpack. the padding is amazing.
i <3 my mac

I'm probably going to get a laptop sleeve to put in a messenger bag. I hate bookbags.
