Is there a lot (or any) calculus? Is it mostly just algebra at the hardest?

Addition, Subtraction, Excel

That pretty much sums it up.

If you read the thread, “Everything you wanted to know or should know about accounting,” post number one will answer your question. Accounting doesn’t require a lot of math per se, although I occasionally had to use some algebra for some client’s work.the math is not what makes it hard. It is more akin to law, especially if you are in the tax department.

It is even somewhat akin to the practice of a law with its emphasis on efficiency and chargeable hours and in dealing with clients. One main difference, however,is that most lawyers work MUCH harder and put in much more hours during the year than accountants, with the exception of tax season for accountants.

Okay, thanks guys. Also (and I did read the accounting thread), what can a person do with an accounting degree (and their CPA cert) besides work at a giant accounting firm like one of the Big 4? Could you manage finances for a company? I guess I’m wondering how much of a background in finance you get from accounting, because I’m not sure if I’d want to live the life of a Big 4 accountant (even though the pay is very attractive).

+, -, *, /, laws and common sense…

From what I’ve read on companies websites, it looks like there are a decent amount of CPA’s in investment management.
