What kind of school is OU?

Could some Ohio residents or others familiar with this school tell me more about OU. Seems like a really nice school/college town, but I don't know a whole lot about it. I'd like to know more than what we've learned on their website and US News ranking, etc. Am interested in your comments and opinions. Thanks!

We visited OU last month. It is a mid-sized university in a small town. It has one of the top journalism schools in the country, Scripps, but also offers a wide range of other majors including business and engineering. My son liked the friendliness of the people he met. We are on the East Coast, so the Modwestern feeling was appreciated. I do not know what you are looking for specifically. It also offers some nice merit scholarships for both in and out of state students.

Thanks, MD mom. We’re from PA ( assuming you’re from Maryland). I was generally looking for opinions on reputation, quality, and overall feel of the campus. It looks very nice. We were impressed by the virtual tour and also by the things we’ve read about it…what we could find anyway, but It seems to be overshadowed by OSU and Miami. I was just looking for input. Thanks!

About every other person we met during our time at OU was from PA. It was kind of funny because our daughter is in college in PA.

That’s funny. I wonder if they were from western PA. We’re actually from south central PA near MD border, closer to the Baltimore area, and I was unfamiliar with OU until I discovered it on US News and World Report website.
Where does your D go to school?

My daughter is at Pitt. Many of the people were from the Pittsburgh area, including the first two people we met.

Pitt was son’s first choice, but he didn’t get into main campus and is uninterested in Johnstown. He was accepted EA at JMU and although we’re still waiting to hear from several other schools (including OU), JMU is the front runner.

I’m sure it’s a fine school but the best thing about Ohio U is that it is only about 30 minutes away from Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch.

Great concerts.

The campus, from what I’ve seen, is ok. It’s pretty big, about a mile long and half-mile wide.

Athens is a nothing town AFAIK. State Street is one long strip mall from end to end.

Ctygrl, my son’s first choice all along has been JMU. However, he did not apply EA, so he is still waiting. He also was admitted to a branch campus of Pitt, but was not interested in that either.

I did not visit both schools, but FWIW, my husband found OU and JMU to be very similar.

Actually, he found out he was accepted at JMU the day after I created this post. He had applied at OU with plans to visit if he did not get into one of his top choices, so most likely we won’t make the trip since he’s in at JMU. Best of luck to your son!
