So some students in my area believe in the concensus that local schools are "ghetto". Although I think I might know why here are some possibilities.
-"Poor school" about everyone here has free or reduced lunch
-Social groups are divided by race(though this seems insignificant)
In your opinion what makes a school this way. And do you think such schools should be reformed. Simple curiosity so please be nice and not get offended.

Two colored girls make more noise in the hallway than everyone else.

lol wut, at least at my school

Metal detectors at school entrances. Police officers do sweeps before students leave their classrooms. ect.

real lockdowns happen every week

I went to a really ghetto middle school. We had metal detectors, only for one year I was there though (8th grade), but the only reason they were there were to make people who were calling the school board racists shut up.

Without trying to offend people, the easiest way to see “ghetto-ness” in a school is to look at the racial demographics. My middle school was something along the lines of ~35% Black ~5% Indian (that’s actually a lot of Indians, even if it doesn’t seem like it) ~60% White. I highly doubt there were more than a few of any other racial group. I’m 99% sure there wasn’t a single Asian (and this was a big school, 650+ students per grade).

Beyond that, obviously the average income in the area, or the rate of poverty/rate of free/reduced lunch.

Perhaps not as ghetto as other schools people go to here, but I remember it being very ghetto.

How was your experience there? Did you find it a place you can excel how was it.

You look at the map of your city and (usually) in the nice areas there are nice high schools and in the bad areas there are ghetto high schools
not too complicated imo.

Go to greatschools.com

If your school has a rating of less than 5 stars it might be considered ‘ghetto’. Three stars and below might be a more accurate rating… but yeah.

That’s how I tell. =/

My school is located in a “ghetto” neighborhood but it’s the highest ranked in the county. Hm… (well it’s a magnet school so that negates it).

I do come from a Jewish background, however, as this is the 21st Century, I was not forced to go to a ghetto school.

^lol

Mine. You can’t go anywhere without hearing some kind of incorrect accent and variation on the English language, and people complain about the difficulty of standardized test math questions like:

Which of the following is greater than 5?
a) 3
b) 0
c) 7
d) 1
e) 5

sometimes it feels ghetto…ghetto stuff happens…they are definitely ghetto people but overall it’s not very “ghetto”. It’s more like when “preppy meets the hood”. Howver, I go to a very, very good school with amazing teachers :)

I live in a predominately minority neighbourhood (i.e. having neighbours with huge ass afros with the comb in their hair, blast rap music & honk at you when they pass by))…so when i ride the bus/train to school and back it gets CRAZY, LOUD and wild as hell…but it’s always fun and i get a good laugh out of what happens lmao.

some of the surrounding schools are a lot worse though…

Schools where students are constantly in fist fights, do drugs, bunk etc.

I think it’s pretty subjective. We had a football game at home against a VERY wealthy, preppy school over the weekend and most of their statuses on Facebook read something to the effect of “going to the ghetto, hope I don’t get mugged.”

Everyone at school was puzzled about it because we weren’t aware of the fact that we’re ghetto.

Our school’s not ghetto but it’s getting worse.

We went from a 90% ISTEP pass rate to 70%.

I go to a private school and people used to call our school ghetto.

Mainly because windows break all the time, pieces of ceiling used to fall down, our AC was the same as the original AC used in the White House, stuff fell apart all of the time, we couldn’t get money for anything…

But yeah… Then we had a multimillion dollar campaign and people had to stop calling it ghetto. XD

our school is 125 years old

yeaahhhh my school is so ghetto. <------least true statement in the world. i go to prep school.

i sort of miss some of the “ghetto-ness” of my public school. I never went to a bad public high school, but it was a lot less stressful and more diverse [background-wise, not racially, although it was that too].

probably the only ghetto thing is some of the crappiness in the older buildings/dorms. my room is tiny, the heating is messed up [i pretty much rely on layers of pajamas and extra blankets in the winter. i’ve gone to sleep in hats. it’s glorious when the heat does do what it’s supposed to though] and the walls are thin. the bathrooms are just plain ****ty. the fourth floor of my dorm is the most ghetto lol… it’s attic rooms and the bathroom has a single toilet stall without a door, just a little partition… for six girls…

Yeah…I go to a school that is about half ghetto and I hate it. We have some kids who live in million dollar homes and some (more) who live in public housing. Most of the kids are just so obnoxious because they’re too busy being gangster to do anything. I can’t stand the pants on the ground, the girls wearing shirts that show me their hairy midriff, the yelling, and worst of all the clusterf**ks in the halls where people just stop in narrow and very crowded halls and block everything up. These kids are just dumb, and they have no work ethic. They don’t care about the rules and were never taught respect. It makes me really sad.

That said, the honors program is really good, we have a literally world class music department, an athletic department that is among the best in the state, it is a very well rounded school that has success in everything but testing. I think I would go here if I had to choose again, but I’m definitely glad to be almost done. I’m not going to miss it much either (I will miss some of the teachers and younger kids though).

hahhahaha i have a funny story to tell…

so one of my best friends attended a ‘ghetto’ graduation at a neighboring high school…so there was this one black girl was carrying her baby on her side with a strap and she was strutting down the stage swaying her hips and arms around. So her mom & her family were yelling “HALLE BERRY, HALLE BERRY, HALLE BERRY!!!..” and one of the people in the audience starting boo-ing and the Mom got so ***ed off she was like, *in an angry black woman voice " you cant be talkin about MY baby like that! hell no!!!.." and they starting arguing…

lmaoooo.
