I've heard different financial job sectors require different skills. I've also heard they have different personalities. So exactly what are people referring to when talking about these jobs?

Anyone? I know I’ve heard many of you say these things. “You need the right personality for " Or "___ requires strong analytical skills, etc.”

Investment Banking: a mad strong work ethic, will power to get up in the morning, energy to be able to go out after you leave the office if you want to have a social life, attention to small (i.e. insignificant) details that your MD will insist on pointing out, social ( b/c it sucks for the rest having to work 12+ hrs a day w/ someone who makes no effort to at least engage in meaningless conversation)

Consulting: no idea…let me know if you do

S & T: from what I’ve seen, high ability to tolerate stress, fast thinking, social

Venture Capitalism: a lot of people in vc/pe come from IB, so I’d say the same maybe?

ib, s&t and a strong type A personality. You are smart, usually the leader, can not stand when things are not in order, willing to work basically round the clock.

Question to hmom though. Megaman’s response to IB seemed reasonable. But why was yours so social driven? I mean, a workaholic personality seems reasonable for IB with good social skills. But yours seems very social/people’s favorite, etc. personality. Why is that a personality for IB?

Also, by consulting I meant management consulting…

Consulting - Agree with Hmom, also helps to be very social, outgoing, excellent communication and ability to relate to different kinds of people. People skills, in a nutshell

Because she is picturing those who ultimately succeed in IB for years as opposed to those that are hired for analyst positions right out of college; the most social of which will be the ones who do the best in the long run.

Banking and management consulting, not to mention big law, are very relationship driven in the long term. Do you know the VCs who will be helping to choose the banks for the IPO? The law firm they’ll use and the consulting firm they’ll need over the years? You probably went to college and/or B school with them–were you a leader and respected there?
