I agree. Female in engineering would get the advantage (to what extent, idk). but I meant that one's major shouldn't hurt anyone's chances.

Not true at all....Pton adcoms aren't stupid.

insecure,
so you think applying as a classics/some obscure major would give one more chance over applying as an econ/more popular major?

No, read my previous posts.

Major doesn't affect admissions at Pton...at least not THAT much.

hello123,
my understanding is that you don't apply to a major (at least not at Pton), but you indicate where your preferences lie. I think political science is a big one, so if you put that down, you are one of many. On the other hand, I don't know if they'd believe you if you put down classics, yet never took latin or greek in high school. I think the adcoms are wise to people's motives.

insecure,

I'm a little confused about your post #12 - I wasn't suggesting that anyone lie or that that would be a useful strategy. Princeton, like many other schools, has stated that one of its goals is to increase the number of women in fields where they are traditionally underrepresented, like engineering and physics. Its no different than their goal of increasing URMs. So, if a guy and a girl both apply with similar stats and they both express an interest in engineering, the girl would have the advantage. On the other hand, a girl applying to Princeton who indicates an interest in majoring in English is a dime a dozen. I'm not saying she wouldn't be admitted, but the need in that area can be filled by the many hundreds of applicants that express an interest in that area. Now, if she were interested in Slavic languages, I am sure she would be one of the few applicants each year that is. And if the Slavic languages department is dying for students, she would probably have an advantage in Pton admissions over other equally qualified applicants. However, I am sure the adcoms would find it odd if someone expressed an interest in that field and there was nothing in their application to back it up.
