What kind of summer programs look good for college admissions? Right now I am looking at TASP (Telluride Association Summer Program), an 8 week foreign language study-abroad program (no english permitted), and the Summer internship at NIH. Which one looks the best for colleges, or are they all fine? (I do have a favorite, but that one is also probably too expensive for me to do)

All sound great. Some things to think about though:

-Your application as a whole. If you’re planning to apply as a science major, the NIH internship might be better. Same thing goes for TASP and the foreign language. A common thread through your application is a plus, from what I’ve seen.

-I remember hearing somewhere that the fancy, expensive summer programs (NSLC, NYLC, Lead America) aren’t that well-regarded; they’re just application “fluff” for kids who can afford it. Not knowing better, I did go on one (with a scholarship) and thought it was good, but overpriced. I’m guessing that the foreign language program is your favorite, but expensive one…I’d suggest digging around for more information. That it doesn’t allow English is good–it sounds more academic-oriented, rather than a luxury trip that’s dressed up as an academic program.

Good luck!
