(I just finished my junior year in high school)

umm…Just learn the language that you’re most interested in. Don’t learn a language to try to impress colleges - especially if its a very difficult language, like chinese, arabic, etc. Learning a language is difficult, and chances are you’ll just give up if you’re doing it only to impress college. Find a culture/region that interests you, then learn the language that they speak there.

Pick one that interests you. If you’re talking about the MOST practical, I would say either Mandarin or Spanish (since so many people speak those languages).

lol, go for English (British) and get a cool accent.

You’re open to anything? Really? I vote for Japanese, then. xD

But honestly, is there a region that interests you? Western Europe? East Asia? Middle East? Any place specifically? Russia? Germany? Italy? Japan? China? Spain? Whales?

Surely you have at least a mild interest in some region of the world?

If I were you I would go with something unique but still interesting, like Danish, but it’s your call. You may also want to think about what languages the colleges you’re looking at offer to see if you could test out of them once you get there.

I second the others… if you try learning a language just because you’re trying to impress a college, you WON’T learn it… it takes hours and hours of studying, and you have to really sort of become obsessed with it. Besides that, no one can really tell you what language is “best for college” because there is no such language. It depends on what you’re doing and what you’d use the language for… obviously there are some in that list that aren’t exactly practical to know (Welsh and Irish, for example), but then again, even that’s relative. You could do a quick search for the most widely spoken languages, which include Spanish, Portuguese, English, Hindi, Russian, Chinese, Farsi, and Bengali (not in that order, and that’s only a few of them)… if you’re just asking for an opinion, then you should learn Spanish (practicality) and Russian ('cause it’s a cool language).
Also, if you want my opinion, Rosetta Stone is definitely not the most effective way to learn a language. They try to rope in customers by telling them they can “learn a second language like you did your first language!” but the reality is that an adult’s brain is much different than a baby’s brain.

I am from Pakistan, and I know Urdu/Hindi, and Pungabi (not listed). I predominantly want to learn a language for the sake of learning a language. I want to impress colleges, but I want to learn for myself [more]. I plan on going into medicine. Any and all suggestions are helpful
keep em coming. THX

ps. AND maybemaybemaybemaybe want to move to Switzerland or some asian country (maybemaybemaybemaybemaybemaybemaybe…)

^ If you are planning on becoming a doctor in America, I’d recommend Spanish.
Or if you just want to learn another language, choose one in a place you’d like to live in or visit one day

Hmm… if I was being practical I’d say Spanish especially if you’re going into the medical field… but if it doesn’t really matter then go for Pashto!! It sounds cool. ^^

If you want to enter the medical field French is infinitely more useful than Spanish:
*France has more healthcare companies than any other (non-US) country
*Many international medical organizations are based in France (Medecins sans frontiers (Doctors without Borders)
*And if you want to visit Africa/Europe it’s the most widely spoken language (most common non-english 2nd language in Europe & in Africa it is the main non-African/Arabic language)

French is very useful in the medical field =D

First of all, DON’T use rosetta stone… waste of money. Use http://www.byki.com/ because it is AWESOME and free, and just overall a great way to learn a language. It has a zillion languages available too. And don’t worry about downloading it, no viruses or whatever, I even downloaded it on my completely shiitty desktop and it’s wonderful.

The easiest to learn would be Spanish, or maybe French, but then again, most students take those in HS.
(I find Spanish from Spain easier than than the Latin American one because of the accent and some sounds)

I bet colleges would find it more interesting if you knew Swahili, or maybe Arabic.
