WHAT language should i learn that would be best for college (rosetta stone)

Most Math PhD programs require 1 or more of French, German and Russian. Some allow other languages.

I’ve always wanted to learn Cymraeg (Welsh).

Why not learn both Spanish and French?

Spanish. Because our nation is becoming more and more hispanic

Rosetta Stone is horrible. Try Pimsleur (If you’re just beginning; it’s not as good if you’re more advanced.)

Hm, well obviously, Spanish would be the most imminently practical.

But Farsi sounds fascinating – I’ve always wanted to learn it. Plus, if you get proficient at it, and whatever your current plan is fails, NSA probably hire a Urdu/Farsi/Punjabi speaker as a linguist.

Also, the NSA offers basically a full ride scholarship to college sophomores who study Russian or Farsi, and high school seniors who study computer science… The only catch (well, that depends on your personal views) is that you have to go to DC to work every summer, and that you have to work for the NSA after college for one and a half times the number of years that you received the scholarship…

^^ Yeah! I read about that when I was looking for Linguistics internships. Kind of cool.

I actually might try to do that if I do decide to major in something like that. After all I live like ~15 minutes from NSA – so working there would not be a big deal. Except… I wouldn’t be able to go to grad school.

Okay, I’m kind of hijacking this thread. Sorry OP.

Learn French, girls love it
and Rosetta Stone is HORRIBLE for learning a language. It helps with vocab sure but that’s it.
I recommend Pimsleur (as previously recommended), FSI, and Michel Thomas.

If you want to move to Switzerland then learn either French or German.

I’ve found French and Italian to be some of the more interesting languages because you can seriously impress people by pronouncing the names of drinks and food properly. Had I the opportunity I would have learned German though.

If you’re already taking French/Spanish in school, then I think Mandarin Chinese would be the next most practical choice for college. Be warned though, I definitely don’t think you can pick it up from Rosetta Stone or anything other than a teacher.
