What laptop are you buying before college to go with you?

Get a toshiba. Just got one. Mac’s are overpriced.

I consider this version of the HP Pavilion a pretty good choice. For $750 it’s not dirt cheap, but it’s still much cheaper than a comparable Apple laptop. At college, it’s pretty common for stuff to end up lost/broken/stolen, so I wouldn’t recommend bringing a premium computer anyway.

[Amazon.com: HP Pavilion DV6-1350US 15.6-Inch Espresso Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium): Computer & Accessories](http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-DV6-1350US-15-6-Inch-Espresso-Laptop/dp/B002ONCD4M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1261952661&sr=1-3)

For under $600 this is also a good option:
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AS5542-5462-15-6-Inch-Windows-Premium/dp/B002P8M6E8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1261952915&sr=1-3

edit: this is $500(within your budget) though I would recommend the above options over it if possible
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AS5738Z-4111-15-6-Inch-Windows-Premium/dp/B002QUZKYS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1261953139&sr=1-1

For that price tag, I really recommend Dell studio series
Indeed, HP or Toshiba are better brands, but if you want those you would kinda have to sacrifice size for performance (laptops from those brands tend to be a bit clunkier)
Sony Vaio, I recommend the most for a bit more expensive range.

I’ve never heard of nor experienced a Mac closing out of a certain websites “like jerks.”

Anyway, I’m probably getting a MacBook Pro for college.

With a $300-$500 budget, your opinion on Macs is pretty much a moot point.

I was going to say, if you want a good laptop you should go for Black Friday deals after Thanksgiving. I got my Sony VAIO for $400, and it didn’t crash in the 2 years I had it ( Although I bought a new one this year for the same price). Aside from that, wait till early summer’ish when a lot of stores like Staples and Best Buy give really cool sales for college bound kids.

All I know is my dad’s promised to buy me a laptop… but that’s 6 months away, so I haven’t really started researching yet.
I want one powerful enough to game properly on.

been on two different macs and they did close out, so yes it does happen.

probably going for a toshiba, as planned, but going to research some of these other laptops mentioned to make sure.

computers change so fast… I think I’ll figure it out the month before I head off. I think it’s slightly irrelevant now.

Hmm well I plan on getting a Macbook Pro. But this is your thread :)

I suggest an HP Envy for a Dell Studio as I have a bad experience with Toshiba. But I do suggest an HP laptop, I experienced nothing bad with it other than it lacking the quality and the lifespan of an Apple computer.

But I do think that an Apple laptop will last you longer in terms of the build quality. Plus, I’m not sure when that incident happened or what browser you were using but Mac OS has improved a lot and if it’s a browser issue, then there’s always Firefox/Chrome/Opera/Camino/etc. If all fails, you can always run Windows 7 on your Mac.

Toshiba Satellite
Sony Vaio VGN (a bit more than what you’re willing to dish out)

Netbooks:
Asus Eee
HP Mini
Dell Inspiron Mini
Asus K50IJ-RX05

If you find a great laptop sans webcam you can buy an affordable one.

what happened with your toshiba?! ahhh, i wanna know haha.
it could have been a browser issue, who knows…but they are also out of my price range, so either way i wouldn’t get it. i wouldn’t chance a computer i didn’t love for that much.

yes, i’ve heard HP has a crappy lifespan, and even though i like them, they’ve gotten bad reviews across the board for that and i can’t be splurging on laptops yearly with them.

Hate is a strong word.

that’s why i used it.

I’ve been thrilled with Acer laptops (dad has an Acer laptop, I have an Acer netbook).

Macs are too overpriced IMO…the specs just don’t justify the price.

Oh yea, I’ve loved what I’ve heard about Acers and was waiting for someone to comment about those. They don’t have a lot of gbs on them - that’s their ONLY fault for me. I know I can’t expect to buy a laptop that lasts all four years and then some, but I want one to last at least two, better yet two and a half.

Then buy an external HD :)

hmmm, i’m not that computer savvy. explain please?

^ a hard drive stores data. i was a little concerned when you asked in your first post for a “160gb hard drive for processing” because a hard drive doesn’t process anything. It stores information. An external hard drive is just a small device, similar to a USB key, that holds more information. I’m not sure what you use your computer for, but if you just plan on surfing the web, writing papers, and doing email, then you don’t need a bigger hard drive than what would come with an Acer laptop.

valid point
