What laptop are you getting for next year?

I'm excited to get my own computer next year! I'm not really sure what laptop to get though. What kind are you getting, and have any suggestions for me? price range: $600-$1000. Thanks! :D

cornell tech store

i just got the samsung x460g. It’s lightweight, nice size screen, and quite pretty. It was 900 i think after rebates and such. im going into CAS

it depends on what you are gonna use your computer for. if you are planning on taking it to class (which I do not really recommend b/c they usually just distract you) you might want a smaller laptop that is more mobile. If you plan on primarily using it in your room, get a bigger one with a large screen and as close to full size keyboard as you can get. There are PLENTY of computers on campus you can use if you don’t want to carry your laptop everywhere.

I have a 15.4 inch HP and find it great for my needs. I mainly use it just in my room, but occasionally take it to the library.

I just bought an XPS M1530.

Honestly Mac’s are nice and I had the option to buy one but I just didn’t think they were worth the price. If youre pratical go

My XPS was cheaper than the 13.3" Mac and specs wise there is no comparison. Go PC if you’re practical.

try to go for laptops with 3 or 4gb…be nice if they can upgrade to 8gb…

you could get a desktop and then buy a netbook as an accessory…

Sorry to somewhat hijack this thread, but about what percent of people bring their laptops to classes? I’m thinking for the science/social science majors.

large lectures i’d say about 1/4 max…

I agree with getting a desktop instead. My 24" monitor and very large tower only cost about $30 to ship here each year…well worth it. Custom built desktop and 23"+ monitor is much easier to use than a laptop, and much better for multimedia purposes, and will still probably cost less while performing considerably better. I have my laptop (and it is only 6 months old w/ good specs) with me and never use it.

@hermanns: you must not live very far from cornell, because 2 years ago when I had to ship my computer and monitor across the country (California to Pennsylvania), it cost me well above $120. And, yes, I chose the cheapest shipping I could find.

^I shipped it from florida to cornell for $32 with $1000 in insurance through ups ground. It is not as far as cal to pa, but still over 1000 miles.

yeah USPS ftl…

I think the laptops at the Cornell Store seem very overpriced.

I just looked at a very nice HP 14.1" laptop at Sams Club with 4gb memory and 250gb HD for $699.00.

To the person that mentioned more than 4gb memory. Unless you have a computer with a 64bit processor, windows will not recognize the extra memory so it would be wasted. You can do a google search for dv4-1287cl to see it. I think this would be more than sufficient for almost all students imho.

I got a HP touchsmart tx2 laptop. I type so much faster than I write and I have self control. Plus if I need to write a chemical formula I can just use my magnetic pen and write it on my laptop screen :)!!! So I dont see any paper!! haha… But I do print out my notes afterward so i have a hard copy :). But no biggy. I learn so much more and faster and I dont miss anything thanks to my touchsmart laptop :). If you are thinking about using a laptop for class, I suggest a touchscreen :). More organize and more efficient from my personal experience.

for right now I’m leaning towards a Macbook, but I’m debating getting a more powerful PC for similar money. can’t decide…

wait until windows 7 releases…and get that more powerful PC :D

when does Windows 7 come out?

not soon enough. but you can download a copy that will work until June 2010

well actually it doesnt come out until summer 2010…but you can do the trial version now (free)

Just be careful if you download and use the Windows 7 RC. Beginning in March 2010, your computer will shutdown every 2 hours to remind you that you need to purchase a licensed version of windows and after June 2010, it won’t work at all. At that point, you will need to purchase a windows 7 license to continue using the OS.
