Re Dells: without losing an ounce of affection for calidan, I have to respectfully demur from the broadbrush blasting of Dells. I have the Dell Inspiron 1150 and love it. I had mentioned above about some quirky crash problems, but I must report (and remind myself) that these are really caused by a quirky compatibility with my(old-convert serialtoUSB) Palm Hotsync cable. Not really Dell's issue.

TutuTaxi: altho no first-hand knowledge of the ThinkPad, I have heard v good things about it. H wanted S to go that way, but S chose a customized HP, which he just ordered.

IBM Thinkpads are great laptops...excellent quality and reliability in one package. Just not sexy. If you spend any time at the College Life forum, IBMs are "your dad's" laptop. Tough sell for what kids consider "plain black dress shoes".

I'm with BLUMINI -- our family is all ibooks and iMacs -- the no virus thing is a very big plus! However, like BLUMINI, we are way prejudiced toward Apple!

Just wondering.... how many of the Mac/ibook fans are males under the age of twentysomething? S left the Mac world behind when he got into games that weren't available on the mac platform/on-line gaming not accessible via Mac. No amount of sales job by H has had any effect.

Not that I think S should be encouraged in his gaming habit (but who am I, the paradigm of cc addiction, to talk :o ?). Just suggesting that any parent thinking re what to get for a S should consider this aspect or realize that there may be a less than thrilled S on the receiving end.

Son will be getting a new computer to replace his PC desktop. He's getting an Apple Power Book. As a music major, this machine can do everything he will need to do including recording editing, and music notation software. The ease of using an Apple is something DS is looking forward to again (we have both PC and Apple at home...the Apple is definitely the lower maintenance of the systems). Plus...if I ever need to call Apple for tech support (not often...but is has happened over the many years we have had Apples), the folks understand English and are able to respond in English, and I can understand what they are saying...
