I am aiming for yale or harvard but i just found out i need to have passed a certain level of math so is that like pre calc or what and i am really bad at math so should i sign up gor a higher level class anyway since i know my math teacher will vouch for me or should i take remedial classes

Through single-variable calculus is advisable. At the very least, you should be ready for calculus upon entrance of college, so precalc in your senior year would probably be fine, as long as you’re not planning to be a math major or anything. Sign up for whatever you think you can handle.

Having taken a first year calc class, even if it’s not AP, would be advisable. But if you worked very hard and because of the way your school works, you could still only get up to Pre-Calc, that’ll do.

I got into the two ivies I applied to w/precalc, but I would 100% suggest calc, unless it is very difficult for you. I will be self-studying calc ab over this summer so I’m prepared for college

So its definitely advisable to take Calculus senior year if you can? I’m taking precal this year as a junior, and I’m pretty bad at math, so I plan on dropping ap calc AB off my schedule for next year. Aiming for middle-upper tier UCs like UCD and UCSD.

AnonPerson1, was Calculus offered to you at your school though?

I’ll be taking up to Precalc although Calculus is offered at my school, and I too am worried about how this would affect me in college admissions.

It won’t affect your chances at all in those schools (and even top schools), provided that you aren’t (obviously) a math major and have demonstrably shown ability in other areas.

Ok, thanks. Yeah, definitely not a math major lol.

I am only taking up to Pre-Calculus and will not be taking a Math senior year, and I am not concerned. I still have a challenging senior schedule filled with college-level classes, and I could care less whether that includes a math or not.

My only option is AP Calc AB online, and as far as I know, only two people are signed up for it. I’ve told my Pre-Calc teacher numerous times that I would take Calc if she offered it as a regular class. Unfortunately, the school has told her that she needs to fill her periods with other classes, so she is unable to do so.

Also, I only have one available slot for online classes, and I’m filling it with a class I really want to take.

Do I think colleges are going to look down on me because I take classes I want to take Senior Year instead of a higher class? No.

If they do? Tough luck. My choice, not theirs.

I don’t like math even though I’m okay at it.

You on the other hand are bad at math. Study it to prepare for college, but spend your time taking your passions, not what you think will look good.

Learning is supposed to be something worth-while that you have a passion for, not a miserable experience where you spend your time hating your lack of skills in a certain area.

It was offered at my school, but I wasn’t accelerated, and placement was determined in 8th grade for which math class. So, I didn’t have the option of taking it though it was offered. YMMV

At least PreCal.
If you took PreCal in 11th grade, then you should take calculus.

Hey that’s the same as my school, only I’m in accelerated. :P

OP: It depends on the rest of your schedule and how much time and effort you’re willing to give Calculus. If you think that you could handle the class, maybe with more work than in some other classes, maybe with the help of the teacher outside of class or tutoring, I’d say go for it. But if you already have a tough schedule and know you wouldn’t be able to dedicated enough time and effort to Calc, don’t take it.

Short answer: if you know you can pull a B, take it. If you know you won’t be able to pull above a C, don’t.

^I know! Chill out! You’re a f-r-e-s-h-m-a-n. As in, you can be completely naive about this stuff for a year and it’ll be okay (and expected). I’ve seen so many posts from you in the past day! Relaxxx.

For the thread topic, preferably some form of calculus (as many above have said).
