What looks better?

Hello if one can join an advanced class (it is not officially known as honors but is recognized as advanced with 1 extra GPA point) and get a B, or stay in a non-advanced class and get an A, what option would increase chances of being accepted into a top college?

the advanced class.

Colleges want you to do well in advanced classes. In your case, getting the lower grade in an advanced class is better.

Most of the time my counselors tell me to take as many advanced classes as I can, even if I only manage B’s, since rigor is important.

Definitely go for course rigor.

Would this be true even if it were one particular course I am concerned about? All my other courses are advanced so considering that piece of information would it hurt the evaluation of rigor if I took one non-advanced course? Would the B hurt more (so far I have straight As in the other advanced classes for this year)?

The advance class, it doesn’t look good to have all advance classes, and then have a single non-advance class.

Advanced for sure. I took AP physics instead I honors and got a B and I think it really helped my applications.

Colleges like to see that you take every advantage of the environment and resources you have more than they like to see you be 100% perfect in everything. I’d go with the advanced class unless you were verging on a C.

If you mean that you have 6 advanced classes and have one extra class where you’d like to take something non-advanced just so you can sleep more than 5 hours per night or because it’s your passion (band, journalism…), then take the non-advanced class.
One non-advanced class out of a whole schedule of advanced classes is fine.
The situation is different if you have 7 classes, only 3 of which are advanced/honors/AP.

I remember some adcom (Duke I think) said “You need to take the advanced class… and get the A”.

Yeah, someone else answering a similar post made the comment that there are simply so many students with straight As in advanced classes in top universities that either way, non-advanced or B, you are at a considerable disadvantage.

Just go for the advanced class and apply yourself as hard as you can. They don’t want you to settle for less.

mix it up with APs and regulars and try to get a 3.5 :)
