WHAT? Mail UPenn a photo?

On the supplement, it asks

(Optional) As the Admissions staff reads your folder, it is always gratifying for us to be able to match an application with the face of someone who we may have met during the year. To this end, please mail us a recent photograph.

What information should I attach? How large should the photo be?

Well, it's optional. Are you ugly? If so, don't attach one.

lol.

pwnt.

haha...

Seriously, Columbia asked for the same, and I attached two. One was a rather silly photo of me in a crazy wig, and another was a rather cute one of me in an ice cream shop. It really doesn't matter, especially if you've never met with them.

lol.

Anyone watch that Russell Peters clip where he talks about ugly people, and how they never do anything about it?

Guy #1: Hey man, I like so hate ugly people!
Guy #2: Dude, I am so ugly and that comment ****es me off!

Brown asks for a photo, too. I didn't apply. (The photo wasn't why.)

:p

I think it's kind of a funny request, but hey, I've got some photos that represent me pretty well. Might pull a laugh out of those admissions officers.

Oh, if only they asked for baby photos...! :D :p

I’ve said it 1000 times before.…Think about it, what does an admissions officer learn by having a picture of you?... Nothing, other than how you look, information that clearly is not relevant to your application. Unless you have already met with people in the school, I see no intelligent reason to send a photo.

People on these boards like to think that admissions officers are all upstanding, bias-free people, but that clearly can’t be the truth. While some may have said it in jest, the whole “if you’re ugly don’t send one” thing may actually make a great deal of sense…...

Some say: “I want to send a funny picture in” or “I don’t want to seem boring”, or crap like that. Do you know what I say to that?.... If I were an admissions officer, I would reject you just for your disrespect, especially if you sent in “a rather silly photo of me in a crazy wig”. Heck, if I’m a Columbia admissions officer with 20,000 apps to go through, why not reject the fool with the silly picture first, it only helps lower my admissions rate…..

The point is, it’s nearly impossible to control how others view you (your appearance that is), and sending a photo seems to have the ablility to do more harm than good.

kk19131....i agree =)

I agree too. Ugly face might change their views about you.

Even though people might want to be impartial, that photograph is definitely going to influence on some subconcious level. I attached my passport photo to my Georgetown application though. It was an unflattering shot, but I got in.

Ok. I am really nervous about sending in a photograph, as I don't want them to judge me negatively (two years ago, 1 person commented that my nose is too big, and I still haven't overcome that comment yet). Thus, would I at a severe disadvantage if the admissions officer considered me ugly?

I am thinking I should get some professional portraits taken. How many photographs do they require? How large can they be? When I send them an album, do they prefer metalic paper (for effect) or is regular photographic sheets preferable for reproduction? This way at least I can have the photos professionally shot and edited, so I can control my appearance.

This makes me so nervous... I am so glad that I'm a junior at the moment, if I had learnt of this requirement in my senior year I would be freaking out even more.

Don't bother getting professional portraits taken just for colleges.

awaiting:

Don't include picture...

It does not require a professional shot.

Ok everyone is commenting on if you're ungly, don't send a picture. Well, what if you're actually an attractive person, and you were say homecoming king/queen or something. Would you send a picture then? Just thinking..

I would agree. If you're looking good, especially females, you might gain a boost in admissions, especially at schools like MIT.

... could you guys answer my question?

what info do i attach to the photo? the common app supplement just ambiguously says "mail us a photo if you want".

I didn't attach anything to my photos when I sent them to Columbia.

"what info do i attach to the photo? the common app supplement just ambiguously says "mail us a photo if you want"."

Again, you should only send in a photo if you have already met with someone in admissions. Also, I don't quite know what your asking when you say 'what info should I attach to the photo'.... but I'm pretty sure the schools are just asking for a photo, and not your life story to go along with it.

I didn't attach a photo to any of my apps...

Just more of a hassle to dig one up where I'm not doing something goofy or looking too preppy.
