What major for psychiatry

I am interested in psychiatry and am wondering what i should major in and what college would be a good choice for my interests

Psychiatry is a medical specialisation.
Do premed or whatever will get you into medicine.
Then do a psych residency.
Then become board certified.
Around 15 years should do it.

Don’t forget that if you also want to become an analyst as well, which will require you undergoing analysis yourself, it should take a few more years.

If you don’t do Child Psych, it’s about 11 or 12 years (Without the analysis! Few people outside of New York seem to do that…)

Edit; Assuming you complete undergrad in four years… do people still do that?

Pre-med, of course. Since you are interested in the topic, try psychology, neuroscience, or cognitive science. Clark University has a very good psychology department. I’m not sure about neuroscience, but not all colleges offer a cognitive science dept., so perhaps you can look into which do?

Duke and Emory both have neuroscience programs (Duke’s is a concentration and Emory’s is a major) and are amongst the best in the country for premed.

Double majoring in Biochem and Psychology (and taking a few interdisciplinary classes) would be helpful.

Basically, you need to get into med school. That’s the hardest part. You can major in whatever you want. There is little you can do in undergrad to prepare for a career in psychiatry. Once you finish med school you apply for the psych residency, which, luckily for you, is one of the easier ones to get into.

any major is fine. Do any major you have interest in and fulfill premed requirements but make sure you connect with some research!

you’re being glib.

Also, if you majored in neuroscience, you would take a bunch of psych and bio, as well as get some pre-med requirements out of the way. If you double majored in psych and bio then you’d have fewer electives left over.
