What major in engineering?

Hello, I really love space and everything about it. I want to become an engineer, but i’m unsure of what major to choose Any help of space related jobs would be helpful, as i’m also not quite sure what I actually want to do. I’ve been leaning towards an aerospace engineer, but I was reading that they usually word with defenses, and that’s not what I want to do.

Any good colleges relating to this field as well, I ruined my GPA, weighted 3.7, and not a very high SAT score, so list any colleges you think would be good.

Home state?
What can you and your family afford to pay each year?
Location Preferences?
SAT score with breakdown?
EC’s?
HS course rigor?
Unweighted GPA?

Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering are other options if you are interested in Aerospace Engineering.

@gumbymom
california
My parents can probably pay off $25k, but I would go to another school that costs more if I received financial aid
In state, my parents want me close
RW- 590 Math- 540, re taking it
dragon crew (leadership), rocketry club for 2 years, over 300 hours of volunteer work at a park day camp, lots of recruitment nights at school (i go to a very small high school where clubs were introduced the second year, im going to be the first graduating class)
Ive taken two ap’s last year and 3 honors, this year i’m taking 5 ap’s this year
unweighted: 3.18

What is your CSU/UC GPA capped weighted? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
10-11th grades only and make sure your Honors courses are UC approved for the extra honors points.

Calculate your Eligibility index for the CSU’s: (CSU capped weighted GPA x 800) + (SAT Math + EBRW).

Once you have an EI, I can give you a list of CSU’s that would fit your stats for Aerospace/ME and EE

capped weighted: 3.65
El: 4050

my ultimate goal is to work for JPL or other space agencies
@Gumbymom

The CSU’s fit your affordability criteria and there are several that would fit your stats. Not all will be solid Match or Safety schools but worth an application. What is your local Cal State? You get preference at your local CSU.

https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/freshman/documents/csulocaladmission-serviceareas.pdf

If you check this link for impacted majors/campuses, a non-impacted campus could be a good safety school.
https://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/impactedprogramsmatrix.pdf

Impacted campuses/majors will have higher criteria for admission.*

For Aerospace:
Cal Poly Pomona*

For Mechanical Engineering:
Chico State
Fresno State*
CSU Fullerton*
CSU Los Angeles*
Cal Poly Pomona*
Sac State
San Francisco State

For Electrical Engineering:
CSU Bakersfield
Chico State
CSU Dominguez Hills
Fresno State*
CSU Fullerton*
CSU Los Angeles*
CSU Northridge
Cal Poly Pomona*
Sac State
San Francisco State
Sonoma State

As you can see from this list, you have good choices among the Cal States and you will get an great education at any of these schools.

My husband and I are graduates of Cal Poly Pomona and my younger son just graduated from SDSU. You should seriously consider these Cal states and Best of luck.

I would also add that you should consider Computer Science as another option. Check JPL’s job listing and you will see openings for CS/SE jobs.

For CS, I would target the non-impacted campuses for the best chances.

If you bump up your test scores then your chances will definitely be much higher.

If you want to even have a shot at the JPLs and SpaceXs of the world, you’ll have to have a very solid understanding of your coursework, high grades and ideally internships and/or club work.

I’m a little worried about the 540 in Math and what it might portend. What’s the highest math you will have taken by graduation? How have your math grades been?

As @Gumbymom asked, what’s your “home” CSU?

Adding to her list, LB, Northridge, SDSU and SJSU all have ABET accredited ME. For EE, Bakersfield, Dominguez Hills, and Sonoma NOT ABET accredited. You have plenty of choices. There’s no reason to pick a non-accredited CSU. Materials would be a good option too. SJSU is ABET accredited.

Good luck!

SDSU would require around a 4200 EI for admission into Engineering. SJSU a 4400 for ME but 3850 for EE so that is a good possiblity. CSULB with an EI 4050 could be borderline possible. Unless you can get your SAT score up a couple of hundred points, then I would target the non-impacted campuses and add a few of the impacted programs as possible Reach schools. Apply widely.

@Gumbymom, good info. I assumed they would all be below CPP. Wrong was I! Still, it looks like the OP should have options. Thanks as always for the great work!

@eyemgh AP calculus will be the highest math

What grades did you get in pre-calc and algebra II?

@eyemgh, CPP’s Engineering EI has risen within the last 2-3 years so the EI’s are comparable to CSULB and SDSU depending upon the specific Engineering major but they are usually an easier admit than CSULB and SDSU overall since they do not get as many applicants as the other 2 campuses. CPP and CSULB still give local preference to applicants but SDSU no longer does so they can be a bit choosier.
