i'm going to be a senior in the next school year and i'm still hesitant on what i should major in. i really like math and history, but i HATE science and english. originally i wanted to major something in business and i love fashion and minor in something like that. but i had adults tell me thats a terrible decision and that i'm not going to go anywhere with that. my sister suggested accountant or finance... but i feel like that is kind of boring. i dont want a boring job. and my dad completely disagrees about going into business in general because he said thats where people who arent book smart turn to. so im stumped right now. i really dont know what i should major in. any help would be greatly appreciated! and any ideas would be great!

Math and/or history, the subjects that you really like?

Math majors can have decent job and career prospects in computers or finance/actuarial areas, if they choose their electives carefully. Of course, academic careers (either research/university/college with PhD, or high school with teaching credential) are other directions that math majors try for.

Being an accounting major and book smart are not mutually exclusive.

Why not? I mean, you may never become a fashion designer, but there are plenty of business things to do in the fashion world. There are buyers, who select the styles and trends for stores; there are retail managers (and I’m not just talking about store managers); there are people who manage finance and business for design houses and other fashion outlets. People hear “fashion” and automatically think fashion designer - bad idea! But there are tons of business-y things you can do in fashion, and besides, a business major is really widely applicable to a lot of stuff.

I guess it depends on what you like and your concept of boring. If you like math, you might like finance. Some financiers use mathematical models to track the market and manage investments.

and my dad completely disagrees about going into business in general because he said thats where people who arent book smart turn to.

That’s kind of silly, since “business” is a catch-all term that can encompass a lot of things - and everything has a business. Education has a business (test prep companies, educational test-making companies, the management of universities and colleges); nonprofits need good managers and accountants to help them maintain their funding; the federal government hires accounts, finance people, and business managers; health clinics and hospitals need all of these people…
