I'm planning on double majoring in biochemistry(pre-med) and foreign language, but I don't know which one to declare on my application that would make me more competitive. I feel like I won't have as good of a chance of getting in as a pre-med student just because it's a much more competitive field. If I had to choose one over the other, it would be pre-med. My extracurriculars more strongly reflect the foreign language aspect, but other parts of my application focus on science.

Would it even make a difference to declare one over the other?
Help, please?

i’m not completely sure but i don’t think it makes that much of a difference. they just want to have an idea of what you MIGHT be interested in majoring… afterall, lots of people change their mind after actually getting there, as well. it won’t affect your chance that much i would say

It does also; however, seem to matter what major you are sort of applying for. For example, lots of people write that they are biology majors at Johns Hopkins. Since so many people are applying really for that particular major, it makes getting in more difficult, especially when combined with an ethnicity overrepresented in that particular discipline. Columbia is more well-rounded than Johns Hopkins, so putting something like Biochem is probably not bad, but maybe putting something like poly sci may be, since that particular program at Columbia is so well known. In this case however, either the language or biochem seems fine.

For JHU, it actually makes a difference. I think at Columbia it won’t matter that much, unless it accords well with your interests, ECs, internships, etc. on the rest of the application.
