What major should I go for if I want to become an optometrist?

Hey! So I'm hoping to get into Cal next year, and I was wondering what kind of major / classes I should take to get into the optometry field. I applied as Undeclared / Letters & Sciences because I wasn't sure what major would be acceptable.

Should I take the same classes as a pre-med student? Or is the overload not worth it since I want to become an optometrist vs. a general doctor?

I admit when I first checked out this forum, I got pretty confused with all the odd numbers and letters following the class names. What are they supposed to indicate? Is it better to spread out prerequisites, or would it be be easier to get into graduate school if I took the prerequisites early and included a bunch of higher level courses?

I feel so lost! Please help.

You should contact the College of Optometry at Berkley and ask them

You probably want to read this:

[School and College Prerequisites](http://optomcas.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=10&Itemid=8)

It does not appear that any specific undergraduate major is required or recommended.

A lot of the pre-optometry students I know are Integrative Biology majors. This is probably because IB offers anatomy, physio, etc classes that I think you may need for optometry school.

That’s very helpful, thank you :]
