I am a junior in high school right now and am interested in renewable and alternative sources of energy and fuel. I hope to research new sources of energy or improve what we have already. So should I major in environmental sciences? Or should I major instead in some type of engineering? I feel that environmental sciences would be better suited to what I would like to do, but may be too specific. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Alternative fuels is usually more of a engineering background. Environmental science is more about things like climate change, the effects that humans have on the earth, policy, things like that. Environmental science employers want someone with a masters. If you want to do pure research, a Ph.D is almost always required. Think about going into Chemical Engineering(think biofuels derived from resources such as algae), Materials Engineering(Fuel Cells, solar panels), Geo-engineering(Hydro-electric dams, Ocean based Energy for coastal communities) Scientists may do the research, but the engineers implement that research and make it a reality.

What Scientificmind said. If you are concerned about your future job prospects, you will go with engineering.
