What major will benefit me???

Hello Everyone,
As of now I am majoring in computer science but am unsure if I enjoy it/understand it enough to make a living for it. I am currently trying to transfer to cal poly pomona which has CS as an impacted major. I am thinking that I should choose finance or accounting. My personality consists of being pretty intrusive and naturally curious, my math skills are fine, I am an extrovert and I am mostly looking for job security as well as a decent salary. Any suggestions are great, thanks.

Careers in CompSci have high salaries, and give many opportunities.

Of course, if you feel that you don’t like CompSci anymore, then don’t choose it.

Accounting is a good choice for job security.

^seconded: accounting has good salaries and job security. Good choice.

^yeah, but accounting is VERY boring.

finance is more interesting but the job security isn’t as great as accounting. Plus you’ll have to decide on if you really want to do big 4 or not. I’m actually starting to regret going with accounting and not doing comp sci <_<

QatJack, sorry to hear that you feel that CS may not be right for you. To be completely honest, there’s going to be a huge demand (even more than now) for CS majors well into the future. As a person who studied Business Administration in college and painfully regret not studying CS, my personal opinion is that you should re-evaluate your priorities, not just jump into finance or accounting for the job security and because it pays well. Lot of people end up in Wall Street doing despicable things that serve no value to society because they wanted “job security” and a “decent salary”. People at Enron probably got there because they liked job security and a job that pays well.

Read up on Daniel Pink and what he said about what motivates people. Ask yourself What do you want your life to mean at the end of your life? If you are still in college, you still have a plenty of time. Ask yourself what am I good at? what do I find exciting and curious? and what do I find to be meaningful and purpose-driven work?

Or you can ignore all my advice, keep it simple, and go into finance or accounting because you like the money. Your choice.
