What major would fit best with my intentions?

I’m going to be attending University of Nebraska Lincoln this fall as a freshman and have been intending to major in finance or business administration. I have found that I like economics and took AP classes in high school. But I also am involved with the stock market and have been learning from beginning of high school. I think I’m a very creative person and like making videos for you tube and also researching self help and business opportunities. As hobbies I build PCs and draw for fun. I have not been into coding but that seems like the labor market to be in as time goes on. I was thinking of changing my major to computer science and then go on to get a MBA and be able to be a manager in IT. If I were to start a business online like a website or entertainment/app development would it be beneficial to have one major or another. I could also see my self dealing with finances and being a personal finance manager. That also goes along with my interest in the stock market. I also have interest in sales and real estate. I think that I am a talkative person and work at Gallup so I have some experience in sales to a point and think I could be very good at it. I’m just looking for suggestions or options on what major I could possibly look at. Thank You.

IMO it is too early to decide. If you are in the b-school you will be required to take a business core which includes introductory classes in a variety of business disciplines such as finance, accounting, IT, marketing etc. I suggest you take some college level business courses and see where your interests and aptitudes lie before making a decision as to your major. In addition, once you are in a college b-school you will have the chance to talk to professors, career services etc. to get career ideas and advice.

It sounds like you still don’t know what you’re truly interested in yet, but the good news is pretty much everyone is in the same boat their first year. I had a pretty similar spread of interests during my freshman year between trading, real estate, coding, and graphic design. I ended up majoring in finance/econ, later switching to finance/management, doing a few internships in consulting and real estate finance, before finally ending up in data science. If I could go back I probably would have majored in management/marketing and minored in comp sci.

If you’re truly interested in web/app development, then I would say pursue it as a major or minor, but it is also something you can learn on your own time which allows you to major in business fields of interest to you. Since you haven’t had experience in coding yet I’d take the intro comp sci course to see if it is something you would want to pursue further.
