I will be attending the Ohio State University this Fall as a transfer student. I have received my Associate Degree in Mathematics at my community college in NJ. Originally, I applied as an Actuarial Science major but then I had asked to be considered for the Fisher College of Business. As of now, I am planning on majoring in Risk Management Insurance or Finance with the Risk Management Track. My reason for not wanting to major in actuarial science is because I did not want to spend 5-10 years taking all of the exams. However, I have opened up to the possibility of attending grad school to receive an MBA. That being said, I have read that most students who receive their MBA's have their undergraduate degree in a science related field (i.e. engineering, physics, mathematics etc.) Also, I have read that it is more beneficial as employers seek prospects with a quantitative education. I'm a little torn and not sure what to do. I am now opening up the possibility of majoring in Actuarial Science again. My biggest fear was that I would not be able to pass many exams and I'd be stuck with an Actuarial Science degree and no job. OSU also has a Financial Mathematics track which I am interested in. Sorry for the long read, but my main question is should I major in Finance and Risk Management Insurance or major in Financial Mathematics or Actuarial Science? If it needs to be noted, I plan to receive my FRM or PRM certification or even CFA if I major in Finance and Risk Management. If I major in financial mathematics or actuarial science, I plan to take a few actuarial exams and land a job for a few years and go for my MBA in Finance or something of that nature. Any help would be great. Thanks CC.
