I can’t decide on what major to choose. I’m torn between business and engineering. For business I think I would like finance or marketing and for engineering I would do mechanical and possibly aerospace. I’ve considered combining the two and doing something like engineering management. Also, Lehigh has an Integrated Business and Engineering honora program which really interests me, although it’s not an accredited engineering degree. If I applied as an engineer I could potentially switch or maybe complete an MBA if I saw myself using both in my future career. Any thoughts?
To get an MBA you would need some business courses. A possible solution would be to major in engineering and minor in business. Its easier to go into business with an engineering degree. While on the other hand, its near impossible to become an engineer with a business degree. I would suggest you research MBA programs that interest you and the courses they require. A minor in business may work for you.
Can someone confirm? I was under the impression that you don’t have to have taken business courses in undergrad to go for an MBA. Many engineers eventually get an MBA if they want to pivot from technical positions to more of the business side.
No you do not need to take any undergrad business courses to later get an MBA. FWIW, I have an undergrad engineering degree and an Ivy League MBA. I did not take any undergrad business courses.
Thanks for the help! It is very insightful.
The above poster is correct sorry for my misinformation. Good luck
Just wanted to add that top MBA programs expect applicants to have at least 2 - 5 years of meaningful work experience so if you go the engineering undergrad and MBA route be sure to build that into your plans.
And yes, also confirming that there is no need to take undergrad business classes to get a MBA. My brother went to a top MBA school with an engineering background and my H went to another top MBA program and had classmates from many different careers (ex. engineers, a fighter pilot, an opera singer, a teacher etc.).
You can make an engineer an MBA but you cant make a business person an engineer.
Start of with engineering and see how you like it. You can add business later.
OP, why are you torn? Exploring why you like either may you make your decision. Why do you specifically want finance or marketing for business or mechanical or aerospace for engineering? What are your interests?
One major that’s great if you like both business and engineering is industrial engineering. Industrial engineers use both business savvy and engineering principles to make business processes more efficient. Lehigh has a major in industrial & systems engineering.
Other majors that blend business and engineering are supply chain management/logistics, operations research, and financial engineering. Some colleges offer these as undergrad majors (the first two are more common than the last one).
@ericskiguy “Lehigh has an Integrated Business and Engineering …although it’s not an accredited engineering degree”
The Lehigh website says, “The curriculum was designed so that the degree could be accredited by AACSB, but would fall short of ABET accreditation for engineering majors. However, it was also designed so that students could complete both IBE and ABET accredited engineering degrees in 5 years.”
So you can take additional courses and get an ABET accredited degree.
If you are interested in both, I would start with either both or engineering, as someone else suggested, because you can add business to engineering later, but you can’t add engineering on to business.
If your looking to get into manufacturing, go with engineering. That plus a MBA and you’ll be in high demand.
