What Majors Besides PreMed?

I've heard that lots of premeds like Rochester. Also, heard somewhere that their grad school placement rate is incredibly high. Besides the renowned music program and the premed program, what other majors are outstanding at Rochester?

According to the Fiske Guide to Colleges, other strong majors include: Engineering, Optics, Psychology and Economics.

I believe Poli Sci is also well regarded.

Rochester is known for:

Premed
Engineering
Biology (W/ Uprising BME)
Political Science
Economics
American Sign Language
Optics
Physics

Many Resources Available:

Strong Medical Center- World renound facilities, plus a fantastic med. school.
Simon Business School is on Campus- One of the top 20 Business Schools
Eastman School of Music- By many even better than Juliard
Building a new multi-million BME facility
For physics- largest laser in the world (OMEGA), and will be making a new physics center to be shared with MIT.

Special Programs:

REMS- BS/MD Program
Cross-registering with RIT for engineering
3-2 BS/MS or BA/MA Programs - Why not save a year tuition if you can?
Duel degree at Eastman
UR student may take private lessons from Eastman

The icing on the cake:

Large ammounts of merit based scholarships

Free bus to downtown rochester every 20 minutes

Tons of research opportunities

An awesome student center designed by I.M Pei

The amazing Rush Rhees Library, and Snibley Music Library

Beautiful campus, and although I will never find a campus that competes with the scenery of my hometown, Lake George, it's nice. . . secluded from the city, but still has all the resources of the city available, and it's right on the Genesee River.

In my opinion UR is a pretty well-rounded school. It's perfect for me, because I want to be an engineering major, but can't see myself the real tech schools (ie: RPI, RIT, MIT. . . .), and Duke and John Hopkins (for BME), though have wonderful programs, seem farther away from home than I'd like to be. I like the fact that Eastman's there and will probably take lessons.

So yeah, sorry for the overabundance of info.

xtx, just a tadbit of warning... don't confuse premed as a major because you have to choose an actual major. Premed is just a set of requirements that you need to complete as well as help with an academic advisor in applying. As a med-school hopeful you can choose any major that you want. You don't necessarily have to choose biology. I am choosing my major based on a fall back career incase either i don't get into med school or i decide that med school is not for me.

As far as programs go, the optics program is the best in the world. No other institution comes close to UR in that academic field. Also to show how great of a school UR is, the department is giving UR (not MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford or any of those) a fusion reactor... :)

yeah, the fusion reactor supprised me. . . .I think U of R will soon be the place to be for physics as well. Now they will have both the world's largest laser and a fusion reactor. . . . .what other school has that?
