Our daughter is studying in Jerusalem via UChicago. From what I’ve read here, and heard from others, almost all programs lead to personal growth. I have heard some good and some not so good things from friends about programs their kids have been in, and my sense of what makes one more reliable than another include:

Are the kids on par with each other academically and the classes are going to be well taught and meaningful for your kid; (I am sure some programs have more of a travel for fun vs. travel and learn vs. travel and do charity - find one which aligns with your goals!)

What is the living situation, and free time situation? UChicago kids in this program are mixed in with other international students, and they have plenty of opportunity to travel in small groups of their choosing, also choosing where and how (within some constraints). We like that, and would look for that in a program.

And, as another parent mentioned - what is the organizer’s experience in communicating with you, keeping track of the kids, and evacuating them if need be. We were confident about this and it paid off - a bomb exploded within 6 hours of DD’s arrival in Jerusalem and the communications with us from the University could not have been better. Don’t be shy about asking those questions - and having those conversations with your kid first.

There are so many options out there - take the time to find the right one for you.
