What makes Claremont McKenna's IR/Government program so great?

I know that CMC as a school focuses on this, but is it the faculty, percentage of students who get to work in the DOS in the future, amount of students who get to intern, or the opportunities? I visited the school and loved it, but I’m still a little skeptical. CMC doesn’t have a convenient location; it’s a bit far from major cities and especially far away from Washington DC (I’ve noticed that a lot of the great IR schools are in the east coast. Additionally, JHU, GWU, and Georgetown are schools I’ve been suggested to look into a lot. Obviously, it’s because of their strong programs, but also because they are located in a prime spot). CMC also seems to have a smaller faculty, but I do understand that it’s part of the Consortium so there is still access to a plethora of classes and professors?

I’d just like some insight because I love the school but am still wavering on this part!

CMC is a great college, and I only have 3rd hand info about IR at CMC, but it is not a school that comes to mind when I think of IR.

Fwiw, CMC ranks #46 out of the top 50 US undergraduate IR programs in the US (Foreign Policy rankings).

IR is not all about foreign policy. If you want to work for a multi-national corporation, then CMC is a great option with its focus on IR & econ.

(Foreign Policy rankings referring not to foreign policy as a subject but the name of the magazine that does the rankings I was citing). Also, International Relations and International Business are very different fields.

Thank you for the clarification regarding Foreign Policy magazine.

Agree that IR & IB are different majors, but CMC’s International Relations major is a combination of Government, Economics & Foreign Language study equipping graduates with the tools necessary for careers in either government or business.

Are you looking at the course offerings and prof backgrounds/interests?

definitely the name it made for itself, and also it’s a small school so that benefits
