What makes “good ECs” for my child

I’ve seen so many posts regarding the “rating” of extracurriculars and wondering how that is defined. I wouldn’t suggest my D alter her interests so not necessarily asking for how to round out this list but would love some input on what you consider “strong.” There are no awards, academically related etc. Her EC time is mostly spent in the water, or helping others. Intended major is Nursing.

-4 year varsity swimmer, State team & year round club swimmer (expected captain next year)
-Link Crew Leader
-Special Olympics volunteer swim coach
-School club leadership: Coalition for Social Justice
-School peer to peer club for kids with special needs
-Girls on the Run Junior Coach, Spring ‘21
-Summer lifeguard annually
-NHS
-Job Shadow: Physical Therapy Clinic, current

Matches her interest in nursing. Looks good.

She has a good mix of activities and it sounds like they are of interest to her. One thing she can consider is furthering one of these activities with leadership and accomplishment. What and how is up to her. For example you mention she is in a club for kids with special needs. What if she led a fundraiser to provide some equipment or resources for them? Or brought a speaker to campus to talk to an assembly about it? Or got the city council to make an improvement to a local park?

Since she is interested in nursing, one other suggestion is volunteer or paid work in patient care once Covid lets up. “Try before you buy” is always a good idea, and seeing first-hand what nursing is like can either strengthen her desire or let her know something else might be a better fit.

That is helpful, thank you. Covid has definitely restricted access so we were happy to have her land the PT shadow spot. Certainly not nursing, but at least it is patient facing and some exposure. The leadership position she holds in the coalition for social justice does a lot of outreach and fundraising so I’ll be sure to have her elaborate appropriately on those pieces. I appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts.
