What makes one get into AOI (Pre-Computer Science)

Hey guys, I’m new here.

I’ve just been accepted into the AOI in pre-CS at SBU and am wondering what made me get into AOI and not directly into the major. My SAT scores are 750 (reading), 710 (math), 660 (writing), a 2120/2400, and my TOEFL score is 113/120. I also took the SAT subject tests and got 790 in physics, 740 in chemistry and 680 in math 2.

I come from Brazil so there was no class ranking and no GPA in my high school. Also, is it bad that I didn’t get into the major? Should I expect bad news from other universities? I have applied to Purdue, U of I, Harvard, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Emory, Carnegie Mellon, Santa Clara and UMinn.

Thanks.

One simple answer is you need to show your performance in CSE114 and CSE215. You should take these courses as a test to enter the major if you knew Java. If you are a beginner to Java, then you should take these courses to see if you are really into Computer Science.

I get it, but why do some people get into the major directly whereas I did not? Also, I know C/C++/Obj-C and I know I’m really into CS haha

So far, people who get into the major directly could be a transfer. And that transfer must be from one of those Ivy Leagues. I am a transfer that got A’s and A-'s, but I still need CSE219 and CSE373 to enter the major( Completed that last semester). Stony Brook, especially computer science department views outside performances as “inferior”. Now, about freshman, AP could be one reason. But I don’t believe freshman can do that. Unless there is an evaluation exam, which is the exam they did not offer me.
I guess you now have an overall picture (Stony’s attitude) in this topic.

Email us directly at enroll@stonybrook.edu and we’ll check it out. Impossible to say without looking at your record, but we’ll re-review it.
