What makes Skidmore stand out

In reading reviews from students, and looking at information online, I haven't found much that really makes skidmore stand out in any one way. Now, I am not insulting the school or students, but I am genuinely interested. I am planing on setting up a list of schools to apply to in the spring (if my current applied to fall schools all reject me) and I've gone back and fourth with skidmore.

Give me some information I might not know about academics, amazing situations for students, special treatment when it comes to professors, or anything that might make it stand out from many other LACs.

I think Skidmore stands out because it's close to three major cities, and if there is a concert or festival or event going on, the Amtrak runs through Saratoga Springs. After visiting the school a bunch of times, I've really seen a diverse student body, not in identity but in interest and personality. You have the really alternative kids, and then the really snooty ones, and the bookish ones, and the really sporty ones. I felt at other schools like Amherst, which is still excellent in terms of interest-diversity, there's still an Amherst "type". I really don't see a "Skidmore type", which I think is pretty cool.

I also think Skidmore is more in touch with the arts and culture than other schools I've visited. It's got a great radio station and really awesome publications, good resources from the town because downtown SS is literally down the street. Also, clubs are easy to join and easy to start. I remember when I first visited, students were trying to sell something called a "buffin" (1/2 a muffin and 1/2 a bagel) to Kellogs, and gave us samples, and though the buffin tasted gross, it's a pretty cool idea, which makes me feel like Skidmore is a pretty innovative place.

I think the programs in management really help, and they say it's relatively easy to double major or major with a couple of minors, and if you want to study something that has a somewhat bleak future (like music, or writing), then some knowledge on something like business or management could help.

I do know that Skidmore has some really strong programs, and some not so strong ones.

I'm a senior who is picking between colleges, and my major decision is city school vs. small LA schools, and Skidmore is my favorite small school because, and I know this is cliched because of the 577668+ college brochures, it's a really creative place with a lot of different kinds of people. I can tell because all the people who are going to Skidmore alone from my school all seem very different from one another.

I hope that helps a little.

actually, that helps alot. thanks for a great reply.

I'm curious - what is the Amherst "type"?

Lol, it's hard to explain. It's just something you know when you go there. I guess if I had to explain the Amherst type would be people who balance a lot of work by studying a lot, which you can tell because they seem kind of tired, yet they are still super-involved in everything. There's a lot of that community feel because the student body is so small that everyone just seems to know each other, and it seems as though wherever they roam they will just find somebody they know anywhere they go, and that rhyme was definetely not intended. Of course I don't speak for everyone in the school, but most people that I know, which is a hefty amount. But it's really something you just know when you see a student, or the campus.
