What makes your school unique?

not much

one teacher on jeopardy
unit lunch which is 52 minutes and seniors off campus
random drug testing baloney...we have adminstrators from schools in sweden or some european country coming over all the time and observing this because they think it is so great
a little more but nothing stellar

It wouldn't be rigging. It would be taking advantage of resources available to us. I believe everyone else has access to the same records as well, so it wouldn't be an unfair advantage.

And besides, that's different from changing our scores after the competition is over.

I did not know that everyone had access to the same records. Of course, we have no Debate Club, merely places were discussions are held (aka fora), since the administration wants no heated badinage that will turn into a fight later. Our school is a powder keg in regards to some of its females.

Well we practice academic debate. It's incredibly organized. You have a judge who keeps time (sometimes more than one), you're given a topic, and you speak according to the rules of that type of debate (there are different styles - policy, Lincoln-Douglas, public forum, etc).

Last time I checked nobody started a fight over the United States' involvement in United Nations peacekeeping operations or its protection of marine natural resources. :</p>

seriously? He was called racist for wearing a redneck shirt? That principal sounds like he lives under a rock.

Well, it was offensive...

In the simulated case in our moot court tournament the student wore a shirt that says "Thank Your Mom for Last Night." Three students beat him up, claiming that the shirt offended them. In response to this (and several other similar incidents across the nation), the government had instituted a nation-wide dress uniform for all public school students, claiming that distracting clothing hurt the educational process, which affected interstate commerce, which justified the constitutionality of the federal government's (as opposed to state governments) involvement with intrastate affairs (education). Some kid sued, saying that the law was outside the scope of the government's powers and unnecessarily curtailed his first amendment rights.

Ok it wasn't that exciting of a case, and the US was sooo hard to defend.

Wyland went to my school. He's the guy who draws those giant murals of whales all over the world. He painted one on our walls in the pool and has some murals around. He comes here once a year and talks about how rich he is and then donates a book or two. EVERYONE at my school hates him :)

The US would have been hard to defend, since the defense would be somewhat weak, and it would require interpretation of loose vs. strict duties. In any case, something similar to that (national imposition of school uniforms) actually succeeded in Jamaica and Trinidad as well as Costa Rica.

More:

Our school's teams is the only team in the world called the Little Hoyas, and were the first to be called the Hoyas.

In 1937, the Washington Redskins requested to use our field for training camp field and were denied.

My school's teams are called the Red Devils, which is pretty hilarious considering the number of religious schools we compete against.

Grammar check: I meant "are the only teams in the world."

Our school hosts liturgies and masses in a cathedral that was originally built in 1803. It is the oldest parish in California and was officially made a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997.

Is the only difference between a basilica and cathedral a papal blessing over the building?
Cathedral School in Cambridge (UK) has been around since the 1200s attached to the actual cathedral as a place to learn both secular and theological works. It still offers the same curriculum (with a few modifications such as modern foreign language) today.

tako are you from Monta Vista?

Yes, I think you're right.

I find it interesting how this thread is more of "Do you go to X High School?" or "Hey, my school fits that description" than "What makes your school unique?"

my school offers history classes. that's unique, right?

one of our teachers is a published author.....i think that's pretty unique.

Our school is full of stupid people. And we have had a bomb threat and a riot that caused for lockdown and evacuation for the former. Oh, and our football team was number 1 this year but lost in the first round of the playoffs.

How interesting. Reminds me of a school nearby...

Anyway, my school is like a "small, small world". Some teachers have been taught by teachers, if you know what I mean. Pre-AP Biology teacher taught the Pre-AP Chemistry teacher when he was a wee-bitty sophomore.

*And we have this thing called Bandemonium that gives local garage bands a change to grap a record deal.

most diverse school in the country. we always get the best results and our soccer team kicks @$$
