What makes a date a date? Would asking a girl to coffee or lunch or something of that sort be a date? Does the place even matter when determining if it's a date or not? Does it have to do with the way you ask the girl out? Would there be a difference if you asked "hey would you like to grab something to eat?" as opposed to something more formal "Would you like to go out and eat lunch together?" (idk how to make it more formal than that but hopefully you get what I mean). Or is it something that both of you would determine at the end, (i.e. the girl would say somewhere in between, "i'm having a nice time out on this date" and the guy agrees)? What would you call a date?

I think that a date is a date when it is planned out, you go as a couple, and the asker pays (or at least offers to). If those three conditions are met, it is DEFINITELY a date. Sometimes it is still a date even if all three of those aren't met. Like, I went on a totally unplanned date just last night. About half way through the guy I was with just asked me if we could consider what we were doing a date, and so it became a date. If you ever have any doubt as to whether you're on a date or not, just ask the girl if she thinks it's a date, or just casually mention that the date is going well and see what her reaction is. I wouldn't be offended if a guy asked me that.

What if the guy asked you, and you said no, wouldn't that kind of create an awkward moment?
