i'm fairly sure I can test out of 18.02
any positive/negative experiences with taking 18.06 first term?

Definitely take 18.06 first term, then 18.03 the second term. You'll have much more fun that way :D

Collegeguy is so right. If you love yourself, you will not take 18.03 in the fall.

wait why. doesn't mattuck teach it in the fall?

thanks guys

No, Mattuck only teaches in spring (now).

DAMMIT! >: I took it in the spring last year

also since you're ahead in math, you might be interested in taking 18.700, the more theoretical version of 18.06

Oh dear no! Loads of people take 18.06 in the fall. I don't know anything about 18.700, but I'd only take classes like that if I were going to be a math major :P

If you were gonna be a math major you'd probably take 18.701/702 :P

I took 18.06 in the fall and i'm taking 18.03 now.

Very good choices.

Strang is the man for 18.06. And besides that, everyone and their mom takes 18.06 in the fall - I had like 10 people I knew in that class.

And 18.03 in the Spring is also awesome - Literally 600/1000 kids in our class are registered for it.

I read Strang's book, he's awesome.

18.03 in the spring might be cool, but I took it in the fall, and it turned out to be MUCH easier than the spring version all my friends are taking now. If you'll have Toomre, I suggest the fall so you don't get lots of busywork...

So to summarize,

Consensus:

18.06: Fall
18.03: Spring

:)

Somethingnew is right, the Fall class has all of 3 psets instead of 12 incredibly long ones.

However, I made the decision that 18.03 is a very critical class in my education (I'm 6-1), so I thought a better understanding of it was important to me, and honestly I wasn't gonna do half of the work if I was on pass no record.

It's really up to you.

Also the advantage of taking it with everybody is that you will likely be able to work with your friends on psets! :D

FWIW, Toomre's psets, while few and far between, were quite difficult though. I remember going into office hours to get help with a problem and my TA ended up telling me he couldn't solve it.

ok so I feel better now knowing that it's that common :)

also, isnt it useful to be familiar with some linear alg. in order to understand systems of diffeqs in the latter part of the course? I'm taking a diffeqs course right now, but there's no way we're getting to that in a months time. i looked through it and only sort of understand it with whatever linear algebra i know

as far as 18.700 i don't think i want to do theoretical math but its good to know that its also an option

Well, I dunno, it's my philosophy that if there is a class out there that will teach you the same material but BETTER (more in-depth) and it's within my capability, I will take it :P It will probably get me in trouble at some point.

yea definitely,it's just that 700 is an awfully high number =D
so I have to check out the "whether its within my capability" part of it

If you can handle it take 18.701 fall and 18.03 spring (and skip 18.06 altogether)
Or just take 18.100B fall and skip 18.03 and 18.06
For people who aren't really mathy but got out of 18.02, you could consider taking some other math class that interests you other than 18.06, which I'm not too convinced that you really need 18.06 (and it's probably easier than 18.03). Taking 18.03 in the fall is really ok too.
