What math should I take?

I'm planning on taking calculus when I get to Vandy, but I hear the regular year-long Calc class is not very good, as in the tests are standardized and people don't know what to study for them. I am thinkng of taking the honors class instead. I suppose I'm ok with math and have a little bit of proficiency in calc (I got a 3 on the Calc AB test lol, but I'm being honest). So would taking honors calculus be better for me or not?

I’m not sure what “honors” calculus is. What’s the name of the class? And what do you need calculus credit for?

Are you talking about Calc 155a/b as opposed to taking 150a/b?

My D, who doesn’t need calculus for her major, breezed though Math 140. She also got a 3 on the Calc AB exam.

I am talking about Math 155. I just didn’t know the name of the course when I was creating the topic.

I know I definitely don’t want to take Math 140. I do need calc for my major, and I want to take more math-heavy courses in my major too.

http://www.math.vanderbilt.edu/~undergrad/calculus/Math-overlap-handout.pdf

Math 150a-150b-170 covers in in 3 semester what Math 155a-155b covers in two. Math 150 is basically the equivalent of AB Calc while 155 is the equivalent of BC Calc.

Math 155 is standardized just like 150 is. It’s pretty difficult to get an A even for people who are good at calculus. You can’t get around the standardized calc courses unfortunately.

Since you’re somewhat proficient in math, 155 is certainly manageable. 150 is likely to be easier but will require an extra semester of calc (170) to go deeper into calc. Up to you.

i thought you had to have a 4 or 5 on the ap bc calc to qualify for honors and be able to take it, am I wrong?

You are incorrect. Anyone can take it. There are no prerequisites. A 4 or 5 on BC Calc gives you credit for 155a/b (allowing you to go straight to Math 175, multivariable calc, if you so choose).

Thanks for the replies! Any other suggestions?
