What matters more grades or EC's?

In applying to colleges what would matter more the grades that you got or the Ec's you have. If you have pretty good grades then will you get a boost if you have good EC's?

I have pretty good grades like a 3.9. I'm kind of involved in some activities but not like so much. I'm in Debate, Key Club, Math Club and that's it so far. My school has limited clubs. What would colleges think of a person like me?

I think the only schools that your ec's might keep you out of are the insanely competitive ones that are practically impossible to get into anyway. Grades are definitely way more important; a good list of ec's just enhances your grades, makes them stand out from everyone else's. Find maybe one or two things you're really passionate about or you really enjoy and stick with them. I don't think you need like 5 million different clubs/awards/comm. service hours to be competitive.

grades....

grades + strength of schedule are the #1 factor,
then test scores (if excellent) OR ECs (if very strong)

Grades, SAT, & class rank must be there for EC's to even be considered at moderately to strongly competetive schools..especially large schools.

grades get u qualified
ECs get u chosen

at least for top schools
