Interview went good, My recs are excellent.
My essay compared my favorite books to my life situation.
Applied for engineering with indicating special interest in writing.

got a very enthusiastic e-mail from Engineering dept about my interest in research.

I sent my science abstracts, poetry, and essay samples as supplementary materials.

Can anyone give me an idea what else I should send (supplementary materials to Yale) to show my interest?

Any honest remarks regarding my chances are most welcome

I forgot to add my Ap scores - 8 AP s with 5. (calclus BC, chem, english , US history,French, psychology, human geography, world history ) national AP scholar, NMSF

This year I am taking AP stat, AP English 4, AP bio, AP gov, AP econ, AP Physics C, AP computer science , AP environmental science )

I also enrolled in stanford EPGY & do some college level courses.

Why are you baffled? Because with a 14% acceptance rate it was a sure thing you were being accepted? This is YALE. Yes, your resume there looks very impressive, but clearly there’s always going to be a lot of very impressive applicants.

You’ve already sent supplemental materials, so I don’t think it’s necessary to send any more. Unless there’s anything new you can show them, that is not already otherwise indicated on your application, then you don’t need to do anything.

You just have to appreciate that there are a lot of very other competitive applicants. You will no doubt get into a great school, whether or not it will be Yale is yet to be seen. Either way, best of luck to you.

Actually it is 13.36!! lol. Yes that is Y-A-L-E…the applicants are fabulous…Send scores only if you do better. There are a hell lot of competitive applicants. You did your best.
You have to go on nevertheless…so keep your fingers crossed and wait for the letter.
By the way you can give them any research papers that you might have done, or ay new ideas on a problem (social, engineering)…and so on.
Best of Luck

Agree…your stats are amazing. You’ve proven your mental prowess. Now…do you have any interests that stir you emotionally? Do you paint or skateboard or tap dance or save turtles (yes, I was looking specifically for obscurity because playing the violin or working for Habitat for Humanity are things that are …expected).

Anyway…I’ll take a stab at “why”…

Seperate
Interview went good
Has anyone got
“with” indicating
I am finalist
Writting competitions

Of course this is just an online forum, not your essay, but…those are some pretty glaring indicators. Were you required to provide a Toefl score?

I also just got deferred from Yale. My stats are definitely not as good as yours. SAT1 2080 SAT2 670 and 680 and my GPA is about a 3.8

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTT

i am extremely active with regards to youth volunteerism and women’s rights.
I sent in a documentary I made about the inequality between men and women in the Arab world.

About 2500 people were deferred, so do you think we have any chance of getting in at all? Does being deferred give you any advantage during regular decision?

Don’t forget that CC is NOT the whole applicant pool. Browse through the EA decision thread and see all the acceptances… Yale admitted, what was it, 730 ish people. They’re not all here.

You’ve done your best, right? That’s all you can do.

Don’t send them every little acknowledgment you get because that’s likely to come off as desperate or annoying.

People are accepted to Yale College, not to the engineering program, which is why you aren’t seeing people on the results thread accepted into engineering.

DO NOT send more supplemental materials. Yale discourages supplemental materials and it sounds like you’ve already sent them a lot. I’m not saying that sending in excessive amounts of supplemental materials is why you were deferred, but it didn’t help you and possibly annoyed the admissions officer.

Piggle: You sound like a strong candidate. Applicants do get admitted after a deferral. One suggestion for your remaining applications: I looked at your back posts, and you say that your main essay was 1000 words. That is too long. Is the limit still 500-600 words? About 10% over the limit is okay, but no more. Can you tighten your essay(s) for your remaining applications? A too-long essay, coupled with science abstracts, poetry, and essay samples may have been overkill. That’s a lot of extra stuff. Yale is pretty explicit about not wanting to be inundated with supplemental materials.

This is piggles mom posting on piggles behalf. My child is really out with fever.
Thank you for your suggestions Wjb. Piggle did cut the essay short It came about 750 words.

If Piggle win national / state awards for writing or a national science award, is it okay to inform Yale about the awards? Right now, Piggle is a finalist in couple of competitions.

Yale has changed and expanded their website’s info on supplementary materials in the past couple of months. There used to be more “discouraging” wording. But the website still says:

You should think carefully before submitting supplementary material with your Yale College application. Many successful applicants submit only the items that we require. There are also cases in which too many submissions, or submissions that do not reflect a high level of talent, can actually work against a candidate. (Underlining mine)

The website further says not to submit:

Unnecessarily long or extensive submissions. Succinct submissions often make a stronger impression.

Since Piggle asked for an honest evaluation, I think that between the essay length and excessive supplemental materials, the admissions officer might have felt there was a failure to follow directions and a tone-deafness about the application. BUT, Piggle looks like a great applicant with great potential and I’m not too concerned about his/her future, although deferral is tough.

I was deferred and I have a question. Can I send in a new short essay (along with other updates)? The one I submitted was very bad and I’m wondering if there’s any way I can replace it now that I am deferred? :S
