Prompt: What motivates people to change? (first one in blue book)

================

As much as we are accustomed to our usual routines, there come times when it is imperative to bring about change. This change may be difficult to implement at first, but when it becomes necessary, people will change, whether they like it or not. Motivation for change usually comes from people's desire to improve their conditions, in times when no change would be deleterious. This need for change can be seen in both literature and history.

In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the arrogant Mr. Darcy looks down on the lower social classes. When he falls in love with Elizabeth Bennett, he finds it very hard to accept, because Elizabeth is from a lower class. When he proposes to Elizabeth, he believes that the result will be in his favor because of his higher importance. However, Mr. Darcy is very shocked when Elizabeth not only rejects his proposal, but also calls him un-gentleman-like. This revelation to Darcy lead him to change. By the end of the book, Darcy becomes kind and respectful and the two are happily married.

The American Revolution also occurred as a need for change. Britain had imposed so many harsh laws on its colonies that the Americans could not take it anymore. They could not just impassively allow the British to continue their mistreatment. For the colonists, only one option remained – to break away from England once and for all. Although they were used to the leadership of the English, they knew that they must change to improve their situations.

Ever since the beginning of history, people have made changes to themselves and countries have undergone revolutions. These changes, motivated by dissatisfaction, have shaped the way individuals live today, and have led the world to its current condition. Without a doubt, there are still people seeking to better their lives, so these changes will continue on for a long time.
