Hello everyone, I have not yet observed a motivation thread so I thought I would make one.

What motivates you guys to kill yourselves with a ton of AP's and EC's? Spending countless hours to get that 5 or making your application the best out there. I myself am guilty to this, I usually spend around 2-5 hours a night on my homework and studying for whatever upcoming test I may have. Sometimes I get so sick of doing this EVERY night for only the reward of an "A" on the report card. My social life suffers consequently but I still persevere. I'm not trying to complain it just gets really old. So how do you inspire yourself to spend countless hours on your classwork? I myself keep in mind my goals of attending Chapel Hill or Wake Forest.

I take a look at my graduating class. It motivates me by giving me a quick look at what I could become…and I don’t want that. Also food. Food is a great motivator. Feeling good about yourself gives you the energy to be on top of your game.

I took APs in courses I had a strong foundation in to get college credit. I didn’t kid myself thinking I’d ever do well in any of the math APs.

For ECs, I’ve only ever done what I love. I’ve never cared about impressing colleges when it comes to after school stuff, I just liked to keep myself busy with fun things like Theatre and Debate.

Ahh yes I do these things as well. But sometimes I just can’t find enough in me to push through all of the hard work. Even though the pay off will be greater than what I have sacrificed. I’m hoping the summer will get me out of this slump of not caring enough to go that extra mile.

@davidssabb: Same here, I will never take a history AP because I would be bored to death. I stick with the subject I am most passionate about, science.

@niquii: Haha yepp, sounds just like me! First semester I would always have my homework and studying done before 9, now it’s 11ish when I am done or have given up.

I’m a perfectionist, and I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t take the hardest courses and get good grades in them. If I slacked, and subsequently were not accepted to a great college, I’d forever be asking, “What if I’d tried harder? Would that have changed things?” To prevent that fate from becoming a reality, I work very hard.

Back to topic here. I will be taking all AP’s, Honors and self-studying AP Chemistry. I love Science so much that I am taking AP Bio, AP Chem (self study) and Honors Physics. Am I crazy? For those of you who self-study AP’s how do you do it? Cram it all in a month, or designate an hour or so every night? Now that takes some motivation.

@studious: Good point! I’m sure none of us want to ask, “Could I have done better?” We all want to be our best and eliminate second thoughts of what could have been.

I think of my parents, honestly. They run a successful roofing business that has become one of the top roofing companies in my state. That’s a huge motivator.

Rusty: you remind me of this teacher of mine who said that whenever he is running marathon, he always tries to find some nice-looking ladies and run behind them and admire them, as a motivation to keep going.
