What music do you listen when studying and what-not

Taking a break from weekend homework and studying for a test Monday. And I go to thinking who here listens to music when studying? What kind of music do you listen to when studying? Do you listen to your mp3 player when taking a test?

Yes I listen to music when studying (mp3 player). It helps me block everything out and get down to business.

I listen to all kinds of music HIM, Pink Floyd, Zepplin, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Godsmack etc. if it sounds good I listen to it.

Actually I do when taking tests but some teachers were nervous about this. One even wanted to hear what was on it before she let me. Then all she said was make sure no one saw that I was listening to it during tests. After that I was talking to a faculty member about studying with music and tests and they said that they read somewhere that if you study ,for example, with music on you will perform better on tests if you mimic that. So far this has been true for me.

Next?

I can’t study or read with music. Or the tv.
If im doing homework, then yes I listen to music.

Really? i just can’t imagine studying in silence. Maybe its because I have gotten so used to studying with music on.

I study with music on, but it has to be quiet enough where it’s just background noise. I don’t like absolute silence, but I can be distracted too heavily if the music is too loud. And I listen to anything that doesn’t have too heavy of a beat when I study xD So like no rap or heavy metal or anything like that.

Don’t listen to music when I study. I usually turn it off when I’m writing something or trying to read something. I like actually just sitting there listening to the lyrics and can’t really do that when I’m busy.

I highly doubt a teacher would let me use an ipod while taking a test. I can think of so many ways to cheat and make it seem like its just music on there. Yay for audio editing software! xD

The thing with the teacher that listened to it I offered so that she would hear that I was not cheating. I know that was and is a valid reason to not let students listen to a mp3 player. It never occurred to me to try and cheat, cheating holds no appeal for me.

I turn on the radio or put my iPod on its dock (before it broke). If I listen to music on headphones while studying or doing homework I start talking to myself. When I study or take tests I normally move my mouth silently so I keep my train of thought focused, and when my headphones are on I just start talking.

I’m weird. :D

When I "what-not’ I listen to conjunto music.

I’d listen electronic music, except eurodance, acid house and drum n’bass. I cannot focus if listening music with lyrics, would never put Bon Jovi on while studying Statistics for instance.

Thievery Corporation

I need silence or near silence to study. I have something called low latent inhibition, it’s associated with my LD, which essentially means that I am hypersensitive to sounds (among other things) and am completely incapable of tuning out extraneous noise.

However, when I am doing homework I can’t stay on task if if is quiet. I usually put a movie in, music is still too distracting. I can’t really explain that one.

Wow, what do you do when you have exams or group seminar and guys are throwing a party on the floor below?

I need to eliminate distractions as much as possible. I get really absorbed in music and I will watch anything if it means not studying, even if it’s something I hate, so long as it’s on. Ultimately though, I end up getting distracted regardless. Even if I sit in a silent room with no computer, no music, no TV, no food, and nothing to drink, I will wind up just staring into space instead of actually studying sometimes. I have to deprive myself of things to get anything done. For example, not allowing myself to eat until I finish writing a page or go to the bathroom until I finish reading a chapter.

Cheating doesnt appeal to me either but the fact that I know ways to cheat using that gives good reason why people shouldn’t be allowed to listen to music during tests. But I guess if the teacher says its okay…

“go to the bathroom until I finish reading a chapter.”

That seems very extreme.

" Wow, what do you do when you have exams or group seminar and guys are throwing a party on the floor below? "

Go to a library or find a quiet-ish spot outside, or to a study lounge. There are TONS of libraries on campus and designated study lounges. The law library on campus is so quiet you feel guilty every time you have to unzip your backpack. The library a block down from me is only closed for like 2 hours every night, and a short bus ride away is a 24 hour library.

In community college I usually found a study room, or honest to god would go sit out in my car. XD You do what you have to!

“about studying with music and tests and they said that they read somewhere that if you study ,for example, with music on you will perform better on tests if you mimic that. So far this has been true for me.”

I had a professor tell me once that if you sucked on a peppermint while studying for an exam and then did so again during the test, you would remember better. I haven’t decided whether or not it works.

Anything without lyrics. I tend to pay a lot of attention to the story of a song, so it doesn’t work when studying.

I usually study in silence at the library. But if I am studying in my room and I am doing something routine like practicing mathematics, I put on Slim Thug, Drake, Kanye West, Notorious B.I.G., Fabolous, Ludacris. Or if I’m studying something that requires a lot of reading, I listen to Bach’s Goldberg Variations or Cello Suites or Jens Johansson’s Fission or Fj

TwistedxKiss: that’s funny the other day in the library me, a student and the librarian was having a similar conversation. The student was telling me about someone she knows that does something with fragrance oils or something, told her that if you study one subject like math and sniff 1 frag. (you choose) and sniff that frag. when going into math class. It will help trigger something in your head to help you remember stuff for that class.

I have never tried it so I have no idea if its true.
