I'm a Canadian student that wants to apply. A lot of my decision to apply to the US schools will be based on your responses. It's not that I'm not confident but I know that I'll receive acceptances from virtually every canadian university but I have no idea if my application will even be CONSIDERED in the United States. My GPA would be equivalent to 4.0 I believe (93% average), my SAT scores I estiamte are going to be in teh 1300s to 1400s. I've never since gr.7 have gotten a practice score lower than 1300 so I think I won't scre that up too badly. EC wise I've done about 700-800 hours of activities, president of various clubs like debate, newspaper, photo and club editor and business managerposition in yearbook, twice vp of DECA (I think that's american),former SAC exec currently club rep on SAC, founding member of a national charity that runs stock simulations for high school students and univeristy students for thousands of members, involved in public speaking, lot of other small stuff like helping in teh school play, helping for three years for hte annual gr. 8 conference, been to douzens of leadership conferences, won our provincial (like a state) DECA marketing business plan competition and compete at the internationals in Nashville. Won 2nd in provincial accounting contest, 3rd in region for gr.12 accounting when I was in gr.11...school board award of distinciton for contribution to the board.. the city's high school president council. things like that...

I would like someting like yo have 0% <-- don't waste the time takign the SAT2 and trying to study for AP exams without the courses. 10%<-- they might be feeling nice 25% <-- pretty good chance and finally 50% <-- looking good and 70%+ they like people like you

ohh and for work experience I was the assisstant to real estate agent and an assistant to a financial advisor... my parents do not make anywhere near enough money to be a developmental case and there are no legacy supports. First person in my family to attend an American university if that counts which i'm pretty sure it doens't and my passion is for business. I can get into the top tier business programs in Canada but the US is a whole new ball game. It's like the minors compared to the NBA :P

Oh and 50, 60 hours of documented volunteering... I have reference letters from gr.11... Our school does not rank students but I'm in the top 10 for sure considering i'm not below top 5 in ANY of my courses so statistically I should be okay... oh and i remmeber some other awards like regional debate finalist and the principle's award. What else do i have hanging arround here.. hmm hehehe.

The reason why I just don't just go for it is that it iseem like a long shot that the american university applications are like 50 pages long.. EACH. And very expensive to apply if I have no hope of getting in. Also I might hurt my chances of getting into Canadian universities that may withhold admissions if they figure I'm going to US and applied to them just as safety.

Hi thanks for hte encouragement but I really need to know my chances as I really can't afford to study for SAT IIs and such just for a long shot. I'd rather hedge my bets on Canada if I have like no chance.

I fully agree with you but if that's even the case that'll be interesting because right now i figured I have zero chance but seeing other posts I had some hope. Of course I'll most likely apply anyways but I'd be nice to apply with some hope instead of playing the lottery

consdieration would be more than enough. if it's that they looked at my application but they are not enough spots left and i get even a waitlist i'll be super happy. on the other hand if they read applications with only 98,99+ i mean .. whats the point in applying right?

the reason why I can't really apply to mid range school is that it won't provide a return on investment higher than the best schools in canada considering their so expensive and financial aid non existant for canadian students.

Def apply to schools in the USA you have a great chance at the top schools, if you can fullfil that SAT score. Your EC's are awesome, but keep in mind if you want to apply to the top schools, you'll need 3 SAT II's so make sure you prep for them right away. Definetly take Writing, Math IC or IIC and a third one of your choice. You are a very competitive applicant and I wouldn't be surprised at all if you are accepted at an ivy. Colleges don't have a set criterea which they base their decisions on, most of them look at the applicant as a whole. An ivy league is definetly not out of the question with your stellar EC's. Also keep in mind you never know with Ivy's since sometimes their decisions can be so unpredictable (ex. accepting a 1200 SAT with good EC's over a 1550 SAT and average EC's). Nonetheless, you are a competitive applicant and should not hesitate to apply to the top schools in the USA. Good luck!

thanks a lot. it's defietly what I needed to hear before asking for teachers to fill out ivy teacher evaluations. I didn't want to be laughed at becaues the only other person I know that went to Ivey had like a 98+ average or a Gold Medal in Figure Skating .. none of what I have...
It's nice to know that I had a chance... Assuming I do well on my SATs I can defintely choose different courses next semester that an Ivy league school will see as more challenging than the maintanance courses I've chosen (due to a course i ngr.11 and summer school I have 2 extra credits and can technically finsh my top 6 by Feb.) and so instead of bumping my marks up a few percent I'll get a chance to learn some challenging stuff, espeically on my own suc has AP economics and AP Calculus 2a/2b (I learned normal calc in 2 weeks so I think I'll have a fighting chance) Thanks so much!

Definitely apply to top US schools. If your SAT I score tops 1450 or so and your SAT IIs are all 750+, then i'd say you have a great shot at HYPS. Otherwise, apply to lower ivies like brown, cornell, upenn, darthmouth, maybe some LACs, and maybe 1 of HYPS as a reach.

hmm if SATs will make such a big difference I think I can invest more time and end up with a great result... hopefully. well it's similiar to the IQ tests that I took to enter 'gifted' with sentence completion, analogies, mathematics all that... I might be a little rusty on special triangles but i find most of it easy.. but equally if not more easy to screw up if you're not thinking clearly.
Thanks!

edit: p.s. I might be spelling ivy ivey in some places. force of habit because of how they spell ivey here:p

OT for a min but actually the spelling thing is ironic since I always lose marks for American spelling of center vs centre, color vs colour etc. American spelling just makes more sense :p

Oh one more thing. I wrote a 30 page business plan with a partner and we won in the province (state) and competed in the US, could/should I send that in as a supplementary to my application? Perhapes a marketing website? Sales pitch flash presentation? ... I have no idea since Canadian uni don't look at that stuff :s

also this sounds strange but althrough I missed EA can I sign somethign to say I agree to come if I'm admited regardless of other offers? I'd be willing to do that defintely.

wow. I'm canadian- and I'm in grade 11- and I was wondering the exact same thing that you're wondering. I really asked myself if it would be worth it. I made up my decision to go for it... I don't want regrets. good luck!

I won in the state thingy and got to compete internatinally but it's like 30 pages heh :p

Can i attach a list of activities and awards? the grid thingy is way to small and the way I formated my activities with a contact person etc. and awards seperately seem to make sense but who knows..

hmm low end of my SAT predictions at 1340.
I wonder if I can get collegeboard to accuse me of cheaitng so I can have a retest ;) I doubt that'll be possible eheh..

anyways I hope my extracurriculars will help. the charity i'm presidnet of hte high school division is expanding to four procines in quater '04 so that's a big thing i'll be mentioning
