Here is another news story on the subject:

How heartbreaking that a parent had to watch their kid treated this way for apparently a prolonged period and it was also physical. Disgusting!!

From your article…

Angie Wisner, the mother of Texas freshman running back Quintrevion Wisner, responded to a video of the tweet, claiming fans also spit and threw beer cans and water bottles at them:

“The fact my son down there and they saying go back to the projects really just saddens my heart that as his mother no matter how old he had to listen to that! Love you Son!”

“But the parents went through this all night! Beer cans thrown at us, water bottles, spit! Disgrace."

People are going to take this as an excuse for the behavior of the Alabama fans, but it’s not. I’m so tired of players and fans doing “in your face” celebrations meant to mock the other team and its fans. I’m old enough to remember when that almost never happened. When it started, it was criticized as poor sportsmanship. Now it’s held up on Twitter, ESPN, Fox Sports, et al., as behavior to be celebrated.

Ok I know the intent here is to diminish 35k kids. Let’s stop. Are we going to diminish the citizens of Boston, or anyone at a KC Chiefs game, or Penn state fans doing this to Rutgers earlier this year or the Duke student athletes for allegedly lying at BYU. BYU had to apologize to the accused. And so many other schools and professional fans.

It’s abhorrent but let’s not make it more than it is. The students should be held accountable but no reason to demonize an entire university.

Sorry but I disagree. The school as a whole, needs to own the disgusting behavior of its own (fans included). No excuses. No “whatabout’s”.

I didn’t say otherwise. And it appears they have - no different then BYU b4 they recanted when there was no proof and other schools.

I’m simply saying - don’t demonize an entire institution unless you’re prepared to demonize many, including ones that aren’t ‘deep south’, and who might surprise you.

A couple of morons did something stupid. The school expressed its disgust and hopefully can identify these morons.

But to vilify and entire university is wrong. Is Penn State disgusting ? Duke ? UF? Oklahoma ? So many high schools including in my district. Possibly yours. More schools than you care to know.

I’m not minimizing it but it’s apparent the intent in posting was to bash the school and it’s wrong.

Article repeatedly uses term fans and or supporters not students nor is mention made of the school as a whole.

Moving on.

I have no interest in vilifying an entire student body - @tsbna44 I know your son went there and I know that from how you respond to other posts on here that your kid was not brought up that way - HOWEVER, I think it will be very telling how the university responds. It should not be that hard to identify these kids. And then they should be at the very least suspended for a period of time and potentially expelled. There is video, and while they are supposedly off-screen if the university really wanted to get to the bottom of who they were I think they could. If all the other students protect them by not saying who they were (and yes, half the school knows at this point) then I do think that says something about a good portion of the student body. Sadly I don’t disagree that it could (and has) happen other places, but the fact is it happened here. And the university can choose to verbally “condemn” the actions and then throw up their hands and say there is nothing we can do, can’t identify those who participated, OR they can actually do a real investigation, track down these kids and make an example of them. I do think which they choose is a reflection - not on every kid who ever attended the university - but on the university as a whole.

Agreed, @Juno16 . If the culprits have season tickets, they should be cancelled and banned from the stadium.

I’m again I don’t disagree. If they even are students, I hope if they can be identified that action is taken.

None of this nonsense - not the kids on my district chanting build a wall at Hispanic soccer players or any of this is allowed.

Btw I would have made the same comment about don’t vilify the school about any school. What did Penn state do the kids that vilified Rutgers ? Answer I don’t know but I don’t think everyone at Penn State is an a-hole.

This wasn’t bcuz my kid went there.

I don’t like this stuff and I think all these people act like a$$es bcuz they’re not thinking due to sports and heat if the moment. And yes in many cases I think it starts at home.

I trust any school will do what’s appropriate. This isn’t the first nor the last time this will happen. It happened when I was in school 30 years ago.

But I guess we shall see.

Apparently the school’s administration has been confronted with these racially charged issues before and not taken decisive action…

The article highlights some of the cross currents on campus as some historic traditions are found to be offensive. This is not unique to Bama.

Here are a few other relatively recent examples…

The lack of decisive action by leaders is unfair to those students that are disgusted by the romanticizing of “Dixie” or honoring former KKK members or acts of racism like those experienced last week. Clearly this isn’t representative of all students (not even close) but it is up to the school to provide an atmosphere where racism, bias or exclusion isn’t tolerated.. Reverting to the OPs question the reality this still goes on and that I am reading about it in the news seems crazy.

Absolutely terrible and heartbreaking. I read about this a couple of days ago and that article had screenshots of the Instagram hate posts. Sickening.

Cannot even link to an article because it’s so crazy:

Beetlejuice.

I saw it on CNN this morning. Both news commentators were speechless and obviously trying not to bust out in laughter.
