What NOT to bring!

If I want to fit in at college, should I get more shoes? Will people notice or care if I wear the same shoes to different events? This is scaring me...

No, I do not think they will. With luck, they will spend more time staring at you--your face-- and not your feet.

they're absolutlynot a necessity or the norm--I was just explaining how a girl can have a ton of shoes : o ) I think I could've gotten by with my shower flip flops, old sneakers, non-shower flip flops, my uggs (or some sort of winter boot) and one nice pair of black heels (plus my riding boots but that's not a normal need).

this is something that happened to my sister, but before college she wore about 4 different shoes, and that's it. and then when she went to college she thought she'd need every pair she owned, and over thanksgiving she brought back every pair except for the 4 or so she always wore.

lots of binders and notebook paper. you won't be opening a stationary store. i've used 2 notebooks and one binder this semester, and thats all i'm doing next semester too.

for shoes, you should get one of those in closet hanging shoe slot things... and dont bring more shoes than you can shove in there. unless of course, like me, you go somewhere snowy and need snow boots, thats different. i only brought as many shoes as would cram into the hanger, my roommate did the same and its perfect. there are girls on my floor drowning in shoes and when they went home for break they had to pack them up and haul them home.

if the lounge has a kitchen set up then dont bother with microwaves or mini grills etc. if you want hot water late at night and dont feel like treking down to the lounge for the microwave get on of those plug in water heating pitchers. some schools dont allow them so just me careful with it and store it out of sight.

those over-the-door shoe hangers are also amazing for hanging odds n ends stuff (brushes, socks, hair ties/clips, sunglasses, umbrellas, w/e, maybe boxers for guys?), and you can put them over the door of a wardrobe, too.

I have one of those! It is indeed very useful.

Do most dorm rooms have closets? The one I stayed in only had a tiny wardrobe with a few drawers on the bottom. Though I guess you could use the hanger things on those too.

Ohh definitely the water heater. I have on in my room. I'm crazy about tea. :D

By the way, I have yet another question. If you end up going to college far far away from home, should you just count on buying a lot of your stuff there? It's hard to pack everything and ship it all over. I know that the college general-store type shops are usually ludicruously expensive, but maybe around town...

for a guy (myself) this is what I have

HOLLA ATCHA BOY

If you're going to school really far away, definitely shop there. Also, eithier linens and things or bed, bath, and beyond (I forget which) will allow you to pick things out at your local store, and they'll hold the same things for you at the store near your school. There will always be a target or something near your school or at least between the airport and your school if it's out in the boonies. It helps though if you've looked around and know what you want to buy. Also, online shopping works pretty well, since they do the shipping for you.

As for things I wish I hadn't brought...actually, nothing. I only had two suitcases to come to college with, and I bought everything else as I needed it. And...I think I have 5 pairs of shoes, and I use them all.

if you go far from home, scope out the area. If there is a Target or the Non-Walmart equivilent around, then it is easier to buy stuff at school. If you are going to school in the boonies, probably buying things at home and having your parents ship it to you would be better. You should stuff your check luggage to the weight limit (50 lbs I think), you get two peices, and take out as much as possible. It might hurt and be a struggle, but I think its worth it to be able to unpack almost everything at once for organizational sake.

for clothes and the closet situation ... Target 13 pac hangers will be your new best friend.

I live in CA and go to school in PA and I did the bed bath and beyond thing, only they'll ship your order to your school way cheaper than it would cost to ship the stuff on your own. Just make sure you give plenty of time for the stuff to arrive. Ordering online is also the best (I got my TV and mini fridge online) way to buy big stuff.

I have a wardrobe (apx 3 ft wide) with one drawer at the bottom (my shoe drawer) and a small 3 drawer dresser. It fits most of my stuff. I also got four stackable plastic drawers from the container store which are amazing. I use them as my night stand too as they are just the right height.

I hadn't thought of ordering online. For large items, did you order beforehand and give them the address of your dorm, or just make them hold it for you?

Yeah, I'm definitely going to need extra drawers and/or a nightstand.

Though I wonder if I should bring a lamp to put on that nightstand, since I read/do hwk in bed a lot.

order before hand--most schools tell you a date when they are willing to accept packages to be stored at a school warehouse. If you have a headboard, get a clip on lamp (sold at bed bath and beyond pretty cheap), they're excelent overhead light, plus you can point them to the wall if your roommate wants it darker.

Ahh, I see. That may be a good idea.

I was going to get one of those booklite things, but that sounds better. Less flimsy.

By the way, how many people found a mini-fridge useful? For anything other than beer?

You can get clip on lamps that you can affix to the headboard of your bed (I got mine at target). Almost everyone has one of some sort. They provide plenty of light to see by, but they don't light up the room so much that roommates can't sleep through it. Also, for people on the top bunk, it's about the only way I've found that really works.

Yea, that was what I was referring to. Will keep that in mind. :D

God, I hope my roommate won't kill me if I insist on the bottom bunk. (I have chronic knee problems.) Maybe I can give her a clip-on lamp as a peace offering.

first, you don't have to bunk the beds (depending on your space), so don't worry about your roommate's opinion on your bed especially if you have a physical reason for not being way up there (I have back problems so I can relate to not wanting to be up by the ceiling).

both my roommate and I have found my mini fridge to be really useful--for milk, drinks, leftover pizza, fruit, frozen things--its great. I would say get a smaller one, though. Mine's 4.3 cubic feet and I don't use up thewhole space, and so I kind of wish I'd gotten a smaller (Lighter) one. I only have this though because my dad lives in NYC so I have a place to keep it over the summer. If I didn't have my dad's house for storage I wouldn't have gotten the fridge or TV.

So you can "unstack" them? That would be great.

Ack, I hadn't thought of that. Where WOULD I keep all the big stuff if I ended up going to college on the east coast? ponders

about the beds: most schools have stackable beds, where you can have it like a normal bed, elevated, bunked, or lofted. Many choices! it just depends on the space you have.

stuff: For some people they can get space at a storage unit, but it costs money and I personally don't know how comfortable I'd be keeping my stuff there for 3 months without being able to check on it. Ask where the good places are. I've gotten warnings about a few by my school that have a reputation of flooding--ask about stuff like that.
