what not to put in essays

I've heard that essays that describe service trips to other countries are being overused and admissions officers are tired of these types of essays.
Is this true? Because I really would like to write my "significant experience" essay on my trip to Tanzania were I installed computer labs........

Also, does writing about a job or ec you did ineffective?
I'm very ignorant as to what these colleges are looking for and what to not write/write about.

Thx

It is not the topic, it is what you do with the topic.

The topic that allows you to be personal, detailed, honest, and revealing will be a good topic for you.

Everything I have read really urges kids to NOT write about visits abrorad, unless it is something so out of this world and earth shattering......based on what I have read and heard, you may be better off coming up wtih something else. Good luck either way.
