What Now?

I am an international student from Africa. After applying to several colleges in the United States and one in Canada, I have not received one offer that includes sufficient aid for me to attend the university. I do truly want to study there this year but I fear that it might not be possible to apply anywhere anymore, and time is running out. Is there anyone that could recommend a course of action? I had to apply to Ivy League schools and other top schools as they were the most-open to giving internationals financial aid, unfortunately I only managed to get waitlisted at one Ivy League, and the chances of getting off the waitlist are looking very slim. With a family contribution of about $5000 a year, it is not possible for me to go without substantial financial help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you.

It sounds like you’ve already applied to the schools which offer the most FA to internationals. I would look at schools in your own country. Perhaps look at Graduate school abroad.

Contact each school, explain your financial situation again, and ask if there are any scholarships for which you might be eligible or other opportunities or options that might enable you to ‘fill the gap.’ If the gap is too great, this is unlikely to help - but once schools see who is coming and who isn’t, they may have more flexibility on scholarships or other FA. In the meantime, you need to check out scholarships for study abroad in your own country. Don’t get your hopes up - this is a very long shot - but if you don’t try, you’ll never know.
