I got $45,000 in grants and scholarships, $2,200 in work study, and $6,700 in loans. I’m not going to accept all the loans because I have outside scholarships and becasue that adds up to more than tuition and room and board! I’m so happy with this, but I am still wondering: Do we receive an official Financial Aid letter in the mail or no?

Even though I got so many grants and scholarships, most of it (the loans, university and alumni grant, and pell grant) are need based. And my parents are going to make a lot more in 2010 than they did 2008-2009. (About 50% more)

I’m really afraid that I will love the school freshman year and not be able to afford it sophomore-senior year. Do you think the amount of aid I get will decrease dramatically?

And also, are there more scholarships and aid I could qualify for while attending the school?

natalie_sd - I believe the written offer in your package and as verified by the on-line FA offer is it! Once you send in your deposit and acceptance you can access GWeb and either accept or decline each offer. Check it out as instructed on your GW FA awardd e-mail you should have recieved.

S has not yet received the FA info in the mail, and on the web page it still says “Your cost of attendance has not been estimated for the 2010-2011 year.” Does this mean no aid? Our EFC is about $20K.

no responses to last post, but wondering - is there anyone else out there (expecting aid) who has not yet received their FA package in some form?

We have not received anything either. We had all our information in well before the deadline…it’s frustrating.

@Ispf72 I have yet to get any financial aid info but that’s because they cannot access my fafsa for some odd reason. Check the activity center to see of they have recieved all neccessary documents

CJ Madison- I never received a written letter though, so I am wondering if I should expect one.

natalie-the FA Award should be in your acceptance packet along with their offer of admission.

We panicked when we found we WERE missing a few things (like some W-2’s and this year’s tax forms – which are not yet completed), but the FA office said that as long as the FAFSA and CSS Profile were submitted, that would be enough to determine the aid package. The tax forms are due by May 1.

Glad to know we’re not the only ones still in the dark.

April 12th and STILL in the dark re: FA. Anyone else? Called again, and were told they may have it up tomorrow.

Yes, I called last Friday - was first asked if D received a scholarship. I told the person I assumed she didn’t because there wasn’t anything in the admissions package. Then, I asked if there was anything else they needed from us and was told there were still 180 “people” they were trying to figure out what to do with…I asked if there was a timeline as to when we could expect an answer because we would like to attend admitted students, etc. and needed to make plane reservations and was told, “you’re not the only family in this situation. Keep monitoring your email and checking your GWeb account and if anything isn’t posted by the 20th, call back.”

We submitted all our information well before the deadline…

the 20th?! Ugh. We are in the same boat. S also wants to do an admitted students’ day, but we’re still not sure if he’ll be able to afford/accept the acceptance.

Is getting accepted via early decision make it almost impossible to get financial aid?

According to my EFC, GW met 100% of my need. They gave me the most generous scholarship out of all the schools I was accepted to, even though it was the most competitive.

However- my EFC was grossly overestimated. It did not account for my father’s recent unemployment, which is a huge hit. My mother makes less than our EFC. GW did not take this into consideration, despite multiple letters of appeal and a special circumstances form. I am still working with their financial aid office to get this rectified. If I can’t get more money from them for at least freshman year, I may not be able to attend next fall.

Good luck with that, bisou-- those are special circumstances and would certainly seem to merit a reconsideration.

We weren’t able to access S’s FA info until Friday - several days AFTER the housing deposit was due, and almost a month after his acceptance!! Their official FA email didn’t arrive 'til yesterday. No merit scholarship, but GW’s grant award was actually higher than we expected (though so is the cost of attendance, hence the last minute appeal). In the meantime, he has merit aid elsewhere, and past-due deadlines for freshmen seminars that he could now miss out on. It is very frustrating, to say the least.

housing deposit?
did I miss somethign?

Don’t worry – I probably mis-spoke. While I think they started taking housing deposits on the 21st, I don’t think you HAVE to have them in by then. Don’t know if date of receipt makes any difference, as long as they receive it by the deadline in May.

There is only 1 deposit required for enrollment/housing - that’s the $800 fee. No separate housing deposit.

Aha. The person I spoke with in housing said people had sent in deposits, but it wouldn’t necessarily hurt as long as they had received it by early-mid May. Am guessing they draw the housing $ from that initial deposit.
