What % of students use advanced standing?

Many people say that you will want to spend as much time at Princeton as possible (all 4 years). Does anybody, and for what reason, take advantage of advanced standing and graduate in 3 or 3.5 years?

I didn't know ivies did advanced standing. . . . do they? Not that I'd ever want to do that, anyway.

For Columbia-Juilliard, you have to finish Columbia in three years along with maintaining your musical studies, so that's really a killer, before going to Juilliard for the second degree. . . but it's so hard that they accept almost nobody.

actually, chan vee chong, the valedictorian in like 1999, graduated in 3 years from the BSE program. and he had a higher gpa than anyone in the 25 years before him.

Graduating in 3 years would save heck of a lot of money for many people. There's got to be many more people other than Chong who did it.

there probably are more, but he's probably the most notable.

but i would want to spend as much time as possible at princeton. as it is, i dont think 4 years is enough to take all the courses i want to take. make it like 6 years. (not to mention all the great freshman seminars)

Good question Dvd56x, I would like to know the answer to that myself. I would also like to know the disadvantages of taking up advanced standing. Like Tsunashima said, you can save a lot of money especially for people like me who have to pay 29K+.

Yea, the money can be a big reason. I just don't want to jip (sp?) myself of knowledge that could help me in my career. I wouldn't mind skipping some general required classes that I have no interest in, but the classes for my major seem too important.

Speaking of advanced standing, I have a question about it.

Apparently Princeton lets you skip sophomore year if you maintain a B avg frosh year and have 8 AP units. The 8 AP units can be earned by, for example, getting 5's on AP calc bc, chem, physics, microecon, and comp sci.

But how is it that a student can trade in 5 AP courses for a whole year of Princeton courses (typically 8-10)?

I would absolutely never ever do advanced standing - however much money it is, I think it's totally worth it, just for the experience - and the bonding that goes on with your class, it's like once you bond with one, you'd have to switch to another which has already bonded, and it just seems like a bad deal.

(oh, and btw, it's gyp / gypped - as in tricked by gypsies)

racist... .

How is that racist, that's where the word came from.

I do not think that you would lose much knowledge skipping some first year general courses and prettyfish, the bonding is important. However, I am sure that some students have done it and gained a lot from being at Princeton.
