what order should the pieces be in a portfolio?

im wondering how your supposed to order the pieces in a portfolio - i was thinking of mixing up the painting/charcoal/graphite/collage/etc pieces kinda randomly, with the strongest two pieces in the start and the end. ive talked to one of my art teachers, and hes telling me to sort the portfolio by mediums - group the graphites first, then watercolors, etc.

i just wanted to double check, becuase this is the first time ive heard anything like that.

also, i was a little worried in the fact that all the pieces in the portfolio were drawn in the last three months. would admissions like it more if the pieces were drawn in a longer stretch of time? (or am i being too nitpicky?)

No, this is a really good question. You’re not being nitpicky. One doesn’t just throw the art randomly together. You should think of the over all effect that you want the viewer to feel. Then with each picture, build toward that effect. I think you should look at this as curating your own art show. Maybe you want to build to a big finish or wow them with you best piece early on. Make it your show.
