What other schools are you considering?

My son (current HS Junior) is just starting to think about schools. While in Pittsburgh he toured CMU and loved it. He is interested in math and music but his main interest is math. He is a strong student - not sure what his rank is but GPA is 3.95. PSAT scores taken in 10th were in the low 700's across the board. Is in all honors and AP classes. He hopes to have mid 700's when taking the SAT's. Any suggestions on other schools he should consider?

Wow, he should be aiming for some Ivy leagues. His GPA and SAT would be a match for them.

No one is a match for Ivy league schools. I'm pretty sure this wasn't supposed to be a chances thread, but he probably will be competitive at those schools.

I'm a rising senior from PA and I'm applying to CMU. I'm also applying to Pitt, Penn, PSU, Johns Hopkins, Drexel, Lehigh, Cornell, and Villanova. Most of the schools I'm applying to are research, science, engineering oriented.

As for your son, make sure he does well on the SATs like he did on the PSAT. He's only a junior so most importantly tell him to work hard junior year and get good grades. Looks like he's going in the right direction so far though. good luck.

If he's looking at engineering schools he might look at:
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Worcester Politechnic Institute
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Case Western
Rose Hulman
Rochester Institute of Technology
Olin
Harvey Mudd
Cornell
Caltech
Stanford
UC system if you are in CA

Some of these are less selective than CMU some more.

When I applied to schools for Electrical Engineering:

MIT
Stanford
Caltech (where I am now)
Carnegie Mellon
Johns Hopkins (Applied for Biomedical Engineering)

University of Florida
Georgia Tech

along with Carnegie Mellon's CIT

You might want to stress more that he's interested in math than engineering, as when most people see CMU they think of engineering and CS. I know the math department there is good, but I think if you can get into CMU you can get into a school with a better math department.
